Chapter 6 - The Emergency Boardroom Meeting

Three days later, the mahogany boardroom of Hargrove Coastal Resorts was packed to capacity. The emergency session of the board of directors had been convened at dawn. Outside, news vans from every major network in New England crowded the gates of the Newport property, broadcasting breaking headlines: Hospitality Tycoon Callum Hargrove Arrested in Massive Federal Embezzlement Scandal; Wife Seizes Control of Assets.
Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The remaining board members—wealthy investors, aging hoteliers, and nervous stakeholders—sat around the oversized conference table, whispering anxiously.
The heavy oak doors opened, and Marin walked in.
She wore a tailored ivory maternity blazer over a classic black silk dress. Her posture was impeccable, her head held high. Behind her walked Agent Vance, serving as federal legal observer, and Jude Barrett, now officially appointed as the interim Chief Operating Officer of the restructured corporation.
Sir Reginald Sterling, the senior board member and an original investor from the company's founding days, cleared his throat. "Mrs. Hargrove... Marin. We've read the federal indictments. We are... deeply shocked by Callum's actions. But the company's lines of credit are frozen, payroll for twelve hundred employees is due on Friday, and our creditors are demanding immediate restructuring."
"I know the financial state of this company better than anyone in this room, Sir Reginald," Marin said calmly, taking her seat at the head of the table—the seat Callum had forbidden her from occupying for two years. "I designed five of our flagship properties. I negotiated our first commercial lease in Boston. And I am the one who discovered the $600,000 siphon that Paige Renshaw and my estranged husband tried to hide."
She opened her leather portfolio and slid copies of a comprehensive restructuring plan across the polished mahogany table to each director.
"Under federal receivership and my position as primary secured creditor, I am proposing an immediate operational overhaul," Marin continued, her voice clear, confident, and commanding. "We will liquidate Callum's personal luxury assets—including the Newport estate, his yacht collection, and his private art holdings—to inject three million dollars of immediate liquidity back into employee payroll and escrow accounts."
A murmur of astonishment swept through the room.
"Furthermore," Marin added, looking around the table with steady authority, "we are canceling all luxury executive perks, auditing every third-party vendor contract, and refocusing our brand on sustainable, high-end boutique hospitality—the exact vision this company was founded upon before Callum turned it into a slush fund."
Sir Reginald stared at the financial projections in front of him for a long moment. Then, slowly, a respectful smile touched his weathered face. He looked at the other board members, who nodded in solemn agreement.
"Motion to approve Mrs. Hargrove's restructuring plan and appoint her as Executive Chairman and CEO of Hargrove Coastal Resorts," Sir Reginald announced, slamming his gavel down.

All hands around the table went up.
Marin closed her portfolio, feeling a warm, familiar kick against her ribs. Her daughter was reminding her she was there.
