Chapter 2 - The Emergency Ward and the Audit Trail

The sterile, fluorescent-lit world of Newport Hospital’s maternity triage unit was a universe away from the glittering excess of the Hargrove estate. Monitors beeped with a steady, rhythmic urgency that kept Marin’s frayed nerves on edge. After two agonizing hours of fetal monitoring, intravenous fluids, and an ultrasound that mercifully confirmed a strong, racing heartbeat, the obstetrician delivered a cautious verdict.

"The baby is stable, Marin, but you are experiencing severe uterine irritability from physical trauma and acute shock," Dr. Sarah Lin said, adjusting her glasses with a sympathetic expression. "You need strict pelvic rest, zero stress, and overnight observation. One more contraction cycle like the last one, and we're looking at preterm labor."

"Thank you, Doctor," Marin whispered, staring up at the acoustic ceiling tiles.

"Your husband is outside," Dr. Lin added gently. "He wants to come in."

"Tell him no."

"Marin—"

"Tell him if he steps foot in this room, I will have hospital security remove him for domestic endangerment," Marin said, her voice dropping into a cold, steel-plated resolve that left no room for argument.

When Dr. Lin stepped out, the silence of the room was broken only by the hum of the IV pump. Marin reached under her hospital gown and pulled out the small USB drive Jude had slipped into her hand. She clutched it tightly, feeling the hard plastic edges bite into her palm. Jude had risked his job—and possibly his safety—to give her that drive. He knew what Callum and Paige were capable of.

Because this wasn't just about an affair anymore.

Six weeks earlier, Marin had been reviewing the architectural budget reconciliations for Hargrove Coastal Resorts’ newest boutique hotel in Bar Harbor. As the former lead designer and a licensed architect with an eye for structural and financial detail, she regularly audited project expenditures. What she found made her blood run cold.

Over $600,000 in design fees and strategic consulting payments had been funneled through a shell company named Apex Horizon LLC. A quick cross-reference of corporate registry filings in Delaware revealed that Apex Horizon was entirely owned and operated by one individual: Paige Renshaw.

Worse still, Paige’s department had no oversight over architectural design. Those funds had been siphoned directly from the escrow accounts designated for foundation repairs and structural reinforcements across three coastal properties—properties where families, honeymooners, and tourists stayed every weekend. Callum wasn't just embezzling company funds to bankroll his mistress's luxury lifestyle; he was cutting corners on structural safety to cover up a massive financial shortfall in his core development portfolio.

When Marin confronted Callum in his home office three weeks ago, holding the printed bank ledgers, he didn't deny it. Instead, he smiled coldly, poured himself a finger of bourbon, and told her she was suffering from prenatal paranoia.

"Nobody will believe you, Marin," he had laughed softly. "You're a pregnant woman experiencing emotional instability. If you make a peep about this to the board or the press, I’ll have you committed for psychiatric evaluation and file for sole custody the moment our daughter is born."

That threat had kept her silent—until tonight. Until Paige cornered her by the pool, sneering that Callum was going to sign divorce papers the day after the baby arrived, leaving Marin with nothing.

The door to her hospital room clicked open. Marin didn't look up, assuming it was a nurse.

Instead, a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped inside, closing the door quietly behind him. It wasn't Callum.

"Who are you?" Marin demanded, instinctively pulling the sheet higher over her swollen belly.

The man flashed a leather badge before sliding it back into his breast pocket. "Special Agent Marcus Vance, Rhode Island State Bureau of Investigation, White-Collar Crime Division. Mrs. Hargrove, I believe you have something that belongs to an ongoing federal investigation into Hargrove Coastal Resorts."

Marin stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. "Federal investigation?"

Agent Vance pulled up a chair beside her bed, sitting down with calm, unhurried authority. "We’ve been tracking suspicious wire transfers originating from Hargrove corporate accounts to offshore entities for four months, Mrs. Hargrove. But we couldn't pierce the corporate veil until an anonymous whistleblower dropped a complete financial audit on our digital doorstep this afternoon—an audit that matches your architectural styling down to the digital watermark."

Marin looked down at the USB drive in her hand. Jude hadn't just given her pool footage; he had given her the golden key to take down her husband's entire criminal empire.
