Chapter 8 - The Settlement and the Sanctuary

By early December, the Newport estate had been sold at a rapid-fire federal bankruptcy auction to a consortium of international hoteliers, netting over $19 million in liquid capital. All outstanding debts to contractors and employees were settled in full.
Marin had moved out of the grand, hollow mansion weeks ago. Instead, she purchased a stunning, light-filled historic Victorian home overlooking Narragansett Bay—a place with wrap-around porches, a sweeping garden, and rooms specifically designed with warm pastel colors and handcrafted nursery furniture. It wasn't an ostentatious monument to ego like the Newport estate; it was a real home.
Her divorce from Callum was processed on expedited grounds through the Rhode Island Family Court, granted on the basis of extreme domestic endangerment, spousal abuse, and financial fraud. Callum, currently awaiting trial in federal custody with no prospect of bail, signed away all rights to company shares, property, and future custody without a fight. His defense team had abandoned him after discovering he tried to pin the entire conspiracy solely on Paige.
Sitting in her rocking chair by the bay window, wrapped in a soft cashmere throw, Marin sipped herbal tea as the afternoon sun cast golden ripples across the water. Her belly was large and rounded, thirty-five weeks along now, glowing with health and inner peace.
Jude Barrett, now officially the president of corporate security for Hargrove Coastal Resorts under its new, rebranded name—Apex Horizon Hospitality (a deliberate reclamation of the name Paige had used for her shell company)—stopped by the porch to drop off the final weekly audit reports.
"Everything's locked down tightly, Mrs. Hargrove," Jude said respectfully, handing over the leather folder. "The Bar Harbor renovations are back on schedule, and the structural safety audits passed with flying colors."
"Thank you, Jude," Marin smiled warmly. "And please, call me Marin."
"Will do, Marin," he grinned. "Take care of yourself. The hospital bag packed?"
May you like
"By the door, just in case."
As Jude walked down the garden path, Marin placed her hands gently over her stomach. Her daughter gave a soft, reassuring kick, as if echoing her mother's newfound strength. The nightmare on the marble terrace felt like a lifetime ago. She had stared into the abyss of betrayal and nearly lost everything, but she had fought her way back to the surface.
