Chapter 4 - The Art of the Deception

For the next four days, Marin remained in the hospital under doctor’s orders, orchestrating her counterattack from a suite guarded discreetly by state police officers. Callum attempted to visit twice, bringing extravagant floral arrangements and cards expressing deep remorse, but hospital security turned him away at the door. On his second attempt, he left a voicemail that Marin played for Agent Vance:
"Marin, please. Let's not make a circus out of this. Drop the accusations, sign a temporary separation agreement, and I’ll settle five million dollars on you and the baby. If you fight me, you'll walk away with nothing. My lawyers are already preparing the papers."
"He's panicking," Vance remarked, listening to the recording. "The board of directors is starting to ask questions about the missing Bar Harbor funds, and the bank is auditing his line of credit. He needs that offshore transfer on Friday to clear out before the board meets on Monday morning."
"Then we give him exactly what he wants," Marin replied coldly. "A clear path to the vault."
With the help of Jude Barrett—who was still officially employed at the estate and acting as an internal double agent—Marin communicated her terms. Through her divorce attorney, she let Callum know that she was willing to negotiate a quiet settlement regarding financial support and custody before filing formal charges, provided they met privately in his executive office at the Newport headquarters on Friday afternoon, just hours before the charity gala.
Callum, eager to tie up loose ends before the gala, agreed immediately.
On Friday afternoon, dressed in a sleek, emerald-green maternity dress that highlighted her resolute posture, Marin walked through the grand mahogany doors of Hargrove Coastal Resorts headquarters. Her hair was pulled back into a sophisticated chignon; her expression was an unreadable mask of calm authority.
The executive suite on the top floor was a monument to corporate vanity: floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Narragansett Bay, custom mahogany desks, and abstract art worth more than most houses.
Callum was standing by the window, pouring a scotch. Paige Renshaw sat on the leather sofa, wearing a crisp white Chanel blazer, looking every bit the triumphant corporate conqueror.
"Marin," Callum said, turning around with a practiced, paternal smile. "I'm glad you came to your senses. Sit down. Let's talk numbers."
Marin didn't sit. She walked to the center of the room, looking at her husband with a pity that cut deeper than any insult.
"You really thought you could outsmart everyone, didn't you, Callum?" Marin said, her voice echoing in the spacious office. "You built an empire on debt, covered your tracks with embezzlement, and when your own wife caught you, you tried to drown her."
Callum’s smile vanished. He slammed his crystal glass down on the credenza, the amber liquid splashing over the rim. "You arrogant little bitch! You walked in here to lecture me? Look around you! This company is mine! Everything you see belongs to me! You are nothing without my name!"
"And soon, your name won't be worth the paper it's printed on," Marin replied smoothly.
Paige stood up, her eyes narrowing into slits of venom. "Callum, why are you arguing with her? Have security drag her out of the building. She's delusional. The baby's probably fried her brain."
"Nobody is going anywhere," a deep voice commanded from the doorway.
The double doors swung open wide. Special Agent Marcus Vance stepped into the office, flanked by two uniformed state troopers and a federal marshal holding a bulging leather briefcase. Behind them stood Jude Barrett, holding a certified corporate hard drive containing the complete transaction logs of Apex Horizon LLC.

Callum’s face drained of all color. "What is the meaning of this? You have no jurisdiction here without a warrant—"
Agent Vance pulled a crisp document from his breast pocket and unfolded it with theatrical precision. "Federal arrest warrants for Callum Hargrove and Paige Renshaw, charging wire fraud, embezzlement of corporate escrow funds, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy." Vance looked up, his eyes locking onto Callum. "And federal search warrants for every server, hard drive, and offshore account linked to Hargrove Coastal Resorts."
