Chapter 16 - The Ripple Effect

My forensic accountant brain immediately kicked into high gear, discarding any lingering morning fog. I opened a secondary browser window on my laptop and rapidly navigated to the secure portal of the regional financial oversight registry—the exact database I had pinged weeks ago when unraveling Brenda’s initial scam.
"Linda, listen to me very carefully," I said, my tone shifting instantly from casual relative to razor-sharp investigator. "Did you or did you not use your business account to funnel personal funds into Brenda’s unauthorized Sweet Sixteen slush fund?"
There was a long, agonizing pause on the other end of the line. The heavy breathing of Aunt Linda was the only sound for several seconds.
"...I may have chipped in a couple thousand dollars," Linda stammered defensively. "But Brenda promised she would pay it back out of her tax return! And she said if we all pooled our funds through our corporate accounts, we could write it off as a 'marketing sponsorship' for our local businesses! It was just smart networking, Nora!"
I rubbed the bridge of my nose, feeling a massive headache blooming behind my eyes. "Linda, using a commercial business account to finance a teenager's private birthday party and misrepresenting it as a corporate marketing expense isn't 'networking.' It’s tax fraud. And when I filed the initial audit report to protect Vanessa from Brenda’s extortion, the automated compliance sweep flagged *every* associated account involved in that illicit wire circle."
"Tax fraud?!" Linda shrieked, her voice reaching glass-shattering frequencies. "Are you out of your mind?! I run a legitimate catering supply business! I can't have the IRS auditing my books! You have to fix this, Nora! You have to call whoever you called and un-freeze my accounts right now!"
"I can't just 'un-freeze' a federal financial compliance hold, Linda," I said firmly. "Once an automated flag detects corporate commingling of funds and misreported write-offs, it triggers a mandatory statutory audit. The system takes time to process."
"How long?!"
"Weeks. Maybe months."
A loud, desperate sob echoed through the phone line. "Months?! My business will be bankrupt in forty-eight hours! My employees will lose their jobs! My husband will divorce me! Nora, you have to help me! You're an expert at this! If you got Brenda into this mess, you can get us out of it!"

"I didn't get Brenda into anything, Linda," I replied coldly. "Brenda dug her own grave, and you decided to jump in headfirst because you thought you could ride her coattails into suburban high society. You made your ledger entries. Now you have to live with the balance."
Before she could scream another plea, I hit the red end-call button and tossed my phone onto the patio table.
