Chapter 23 - The Mentor’s Ledger

“Richard,” I said, my voice dropping an octave into the cold, clinical tone I reserved for hostile corporate audits. The panic that had gripped my chest a moment ago evaporated, instantly replaced by the razor-sharp focus of an investigator confronting a hostile target. “You’ve been hiding behind shell companies for five years, and this is how you resurface? Forging my cryptographic signature on a three-million-dollar illicit wire transfer?” On the other end of the line, Richard Vance let out a low, amused laugh, the sound grating against the static of the international connection. *“Hiding, Nora? Such an unrefined word. I prefer to call it strategic repositioning. And as for the signature—is it really a forgery if you left the digital door wide open when we worked together at Vanguard Capital? You were always the brilliant one, my dear. You built the algorithms that made these clean transfers possible. I simply... repurposed your architecture.”* My grip on the steering wheel tightened until my knuckles turned white. He was talking about the proprietary anti-fraud detection software I had designed during my tenure at Vanguard Capital—software that was supposed to protect corporate accounts, not hollow them out. “You’re blackmailing me,” I stated flatly, cutting straight through his corporate euphemisms. *“I am offering you an irresistible career opportunity,”* Richard corrected smoothly. *“Global Asset Holdings LLC is managing a portfolio worth over nine hundred million dollars for high-net-worth individuals across Europe and North America. Unfortunately, our current internal auditors are... thoroughly incompetent. We have a discrepancy of precisely forty-two million dollars missing from our secondary ledger, and the regulatory authorities in Zurich are breathing down our necks. I need a forensic accountant of your caliber to balance the books before the quarterly audit hits on Friday. Complete the audit, find the missing funds, and discretely return the blame to our late-stage investors—and this little three-million-dollar anomaly bearing your signature quietly disappears forever. Refuse, and tomorrow morning, federal prosecutors in New York will receive a very interesting package detailing your involvement in international money laundering.”* The trap was absolute, airtight, and executed with ruthless precision. Forty-two million dollars missing. A rigged audit. If I took the case, I would be walking into a den of international thieves where I was expected to act as the fall guy or the miracle worker. “And if I find the missing forty-two million?” I asked, my mind calculating the variables. *“Then you walk away a very wealthy woman, and your name is cleared,”* Richard replied smoothly. *“Your flight to Zurich departs tomorrow at 10:00 AM from JFK. First class, naturally. Your ticket is already in your inbox. Don't be late, Nora. The balance sheet waits for no one.”* The line went dead.
