Chapter 27 - The Digital Checkmate

With a burst of adrenaline, I lunged across the server room floor, intercepting Chloe just a fraction of a second before her fingers could slam down the enter key on her ruggedized laptop. We collided hard against the metal server racks, the force of our impact rattling the cooling fans and sending a cascade of sparks flying from an exposed power strip. Chloe swung her elbow backward, catching me squarely in the ribs, but I refused to let go. I hooked my foot behind her ankle and swept her legs out from under her, bringing us both crashing down onto the metal-grate floor. Before she could recover, I pinned her wrists against the grating with one hand and reached out with my other hand to grab her laptop. I ripped the master Ethernet cable directly out of the machine’s side port, severing her connection to the building’s router and locking the terminal into an offline sandbox mode. Chloe struggled fiercely beneath me, her breath coming in ragged gasps, but she was entirely neutralized. I stood up slowly, brushing the dust off my trench coat, and held her laptop firmly in my left hand. The screen glowed brightly in the dim server room, displaying the active transfer script paused at ninety-nine percent completion—and right beneath it, an automated backup window confirming that the entire operational ledger of Global Asset Holdings had just been automatically synchronized to my secure, off-site cloud vault. Checkmate. Chloe glared up at me from the floor, her eyes burning with pure venom. “You think you’ve won, Nora? Richard Vance is already in Chicago. He’s not in Zurich. He flew in privately this evening to oversee the final phase of the asset transfer. If you think you can outsmart him and an entire syndicate of corporate heavyweights all by yourself, you’re out of your mind.” Before I could process the terrifying implication of her words—that Richard Vance wasn't thousands of miles away in Switzerland, but right here in the city—the heavy steel door at the entrance of the basement utility corridor slammed open with a deafening crash. Heavy, purposeful footsteps echoed down the concrete hallway, accompanied by the unmistakable sound of men closing in on our position.
