Chapter 30 - The Open Ledger

The luxury sedan surged forward with a powerful roar, tires squealing loudly against the concrete floor as it broke traction and lunged directly toward the rolling security gate at the exit of the parking garage. Richard stumbled backward, shouting curses as he scrambled out of the path of the accelerating vehicle. With a deafening crash, my car smashed straight through the rising security gate, sending a shower of yellow plastic sparks and shattered fiberglass flying into the rainy night air. I didn't look back. I gripped the steering wheel with both hands, merged onto the empty downtown highway, and accelerated into the dark, rain-swept horizon of Chicago. On the passenger seat beside me, Chloe's ruggedized laptop rested right next to my briefcase and the encrypted cloud sync status indicator, which was currently blinking a steady, triumphant green. The entire operational ledger, corporate shell network, and co-conspirator trail of Global Asset Holdings LLC had already been successfully uploaded, encrypted, and automatically transmitted to the United States Department of Justice Financial Crimes Division and the Federal Bureau of Investigation cyber-crime task force. By the time the sun rose over the Chicago skyline at 7:30 AM, Richard Vance, Chloe Higgins, and every single corrupt executive involved in the embezzlement ring would find their bank accounts frozen, their passports revoked, and their corporate empire systematically dismantled asset by asset. My phone buzzed persistently on the passenger seat, lighting up with a flood of panicked text messages from Brenda, frantic voicemails from my father demanding to know why federal agents were currently swarming their suburban home with search warrants, and an urgent ping from an unknown international terminal in Zurich. I reached over, picked up the phone, and silenced the notifications with a single swipe. I didn't block them. I didn't argue with them. I simply locked the screen, tossed the phone back onto the passenger seat, and smiled as I drove out into the brilliant, unwritten dawn of the rest of my life—fully aware that while the books were finally balanced, the most important chapter of my story was only just beginning...
