Chapter 29 - The Parking Garage Showdown

Slowly, deliberately, I reached over and pressed the power window button. The glass slid down with a quiet mechanical hum, exposing the damp garage air and the chilling, composed face of my former mentor. “You really are remarkably persistent, Nora,” Richard said smoothly, his voice completely devoid of any tension, as if we were discussing financial projections over a casual business lunch instead of facing off in a subterranean parking garage at three in the morning. “I must admit, when Chloe reported that you were digging into the transaction metadata, I underestimated your tenacity. But running away won't change the fundamental math of your situation. You have my laptop containing the active transfer script, and I have federal prosecutors ready to indict you for wire fraud within the hour. Let’s be reasonable. Hand over the laptop, step out of the car, and let’s catch a private flight to Zurich together tomorrow. We can split the forty-two million three ways—you, Chloe, and myself. You’ll never have to worry about balancing another corporate ledger for the rest of your life.” I looked at him, feeling a profound sense of clarity wash over me. The man who had once taught me everything I knew about accounting and financial ethics had rotted from the inside out, corrupted entirely by greed and power. He thought everything in life could be bought, traded, or blackmailed into compliance—just like Brenda had tried to do with her daughter's sweet sixteen invoice, and just like my father had tried to enforce with his threats of familial exile. But they were all operating on a fundamentally flawed balance sheet. “You still don't get it, Richard,” I said, my voice steady, calm, and completely devoid of fear. “You think life is a ledger where people can be bought off and crimes can be swept under the rug if the numbers match up. But you forgot the most important rule of auditing: the books always balance in the end.” Before Richard could react or reach into his jacket pocket, I slammed my hand down on the center console, hit the automatic garage door override button, and simultaneously jammed my foot hard onto the accelerator.
