Chapter 26 - The Confrontation in the Server Room

I stepped out from the shadows of the concrete hallway and walked directly into the open server room, my combat boots clicking sharply against the metal-grate floor. “Nice setup, Chloe,” I said evenly, my voice cutting cleanly through the steady hum of the cooling fans. Chloe froze mid-keystroke. Her fingers hovered over the mechanical keyboard of her ruggedized laptop for a fraction of a second before she slowly straightened up and turned around. A cold, calculating smile spread across her face, devoid of any genuine warmth or surprise. She didn't look like a terrified subordinate caught in the act; she looked like an apex predator who had just successfully cornered its prey. “Nora,” Chloe purred, leaning casually against the edge of the server rack. “I was wondering when you’d trace the metadata back to the source. You were always too thorough for your own good.” “You forged my cryptographic signature on the Vance transfer document,” I stated, keeping my distance and holding my ground, my eyes locked onto hers. “You broke into my old archives, stole my public key metadata, and manufactured a federal indictment to scare me into flying to Zurich. Why, Chloe? What does Richard have on you that makes you willing to ruin your own career just to act as his errand girl?” Chloe let out a sharp, cynical laugh that echoed harshly off the concrete walls. “Ruin my career? Nora, look around you. The corporate world isn’t about playing fair and balancing spreadsheets for honest pay. It’s about power, leverage, and survival. Richard didn’t blackmail me—he partnered with me. When I left Vanguard Capital, I didn’t just quit; I walked away with the blueprint of the forty-two-million-dollar offshore diversion scheme that Richard and his executive board engineered three years ago. But to successfully launder those funds out of Europe and into clean American real estate, they needed a certified master forensic auditor to sign off on the asset reconciliation. They needed someone whose professional reputation was so pristine that no federal investigator would ever dare question their audit report. They needed you, Nora. And when you refused to play ball with Brenda’s little sweet sixteen invoice and walked away from the family drama, we realized you were slipping through our fingers. We had to force your hand.” I narrowed my eyes, processing every word. The forty-two million dollars wasn't missing by accident; it was a premeditated embezzlement scheme orchestrated by Richard Vance and executed through corporate shell companies, with Chloe acting as the domestic conduit. And they needed my signature to legalize the theft. “You’re not going to get away with this,” I said quietly. “I’ve already backed up the server logs and routed the transaction metadata to an encrypted cloud repository. The moment you press enter on that laptop, federal authorities will have your IP address, your physical location, and your entire co-conspirator ledger.” Chloe’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a flash of genuine panic. She lunged forward toward the laptop keyboard to execute an emergency data wipe script. But I was already moving.
