Chapter 38 - The Sub-Basement Summit

The crimson emergency lights pulsed rhythmically against the stone walls of my office, casting long, dramatic shadows across the mahogany desk. Outside the frosted windows, the muffled sound of approaching footsteps echoed down the hallway—heavy, measured, and accompanied by the distinctive metallic clink of tactical gear.
"Well," Chloe said, her fingers flying across her portable terminal with terrifying speed as she bypassed the room's digital firewall. "Looks like our reservation for dinner just got canceled."
"They want the master ledger back," I said, walking calmly to my briefcase and pulling out the physical backup drive containing the unredacted audit trail. "They think locking us in here will stop the upload."
"Too late for that," Chloe grinned, spinning her screen around to show a completion bar reading *99.8%*. "Interpol already has the core files. Bern is dispatching a tactical compliance unit to the lobby as we speak. All we have to do is survive the next four minutes."
The door handle rattled violently. Then came a sharp, metallic smash as a heavy breaching charge blew the electronic lock off the frame. The door swung inward, and Director K stepped through, flanked by two men in dark tactical suits holding suppressed submachine guns.
Her hair was slightly disheveled, but her expression was as sharp and predatory as ever. She wasn't holding a weapon; she was holding a sleek, silver tablet displaying a live feed of the building’s security network.
"Such a disappointment, Arthur," Director K said, walking slowly into the center of the office, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor. "You had a golden opportunity. A seat at the pinnacle of global finance, unlimited wealth, and a clean slate. And you threw it all away for what? Some misplaced sense of bureaucratic morality?"
"I spent my entire life cleaning up messes made by arrogant narcissists who thought they were above the rules," I replied, standing my ground behind the mahogany desk, my hands resting calmly on the surface. "First my sister, then my father, and now you. You people really don't understand basic math, do you? Every fraudulent transaction leaves a trail. Every lie has a cost. And sooner or later, the balance sheet demands payment in full."
Director K’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom. "Get the drives," she snapped to the guards. "And if they resist—"
*CLANG!*
The floor-to-ceiling windows behind us suddenly shattered inward with an explosive roar, raining a glittering cascade of safety glass across the room. Dropping down from heavy-duty rappel ropes attached to the roof came four members of the Swiss Federal Police tactical intervention unit, their assault rifles drawn and laser sights locked dead onto the guards.
"FEDERAL POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!" shouted the lead officer in crisp, commanding German, instantly pivoting his rifle toward Director K.

The two guards froze, their hands hovering over their holsters before slowly raising them into the air. Director K stared at the tactical team, her face draining of color as she realized the digital trap had closed entirely.
