Chapter 36 - The Visitor from Geneva

By the second week, my reputation within the European financial intelligence community had shifted from that of an enigmatic American consultant to something resembling legend. They called me "The Balance Sheet"—the man who could walk into a hurricane of corporate corruption and leave behind pristine, mathematically unassailable order.

I was deep into analyzing a complex network of shell companies tied to a disgraced Swiss asset manager when my executive assistant buzzed through the intercom.

"Mr. Vance? You have a visitor in the lobby. She insists it’s urgent, and she bypassed the standard appointment protocol using a Class-A diplomatic override."

I frowned. "Did she give a name?"

"She says her name is Chloe Higgins."

I sat up straight, instantly dropping my pen. Chloe—the razor-sharp cybersecurity specialist whose ruggedized laptop and encrypted cloud sync had blown open the entire Global Asset Holdings conspiracy back in Chicago. What was she doing in Zürich?

"Send her up immediately," I said.

Two minutes later, the heavy mahogany door of my office swung open. Chloe walked in, looking every bit the digital warrior she was—wearing a sleek black leather jacket, cargo pants, and carrying the same battered ruggedized backpack that had housed the evidence vault. Her dark hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail, and her eyes held that familiar, restless spark of adrenaline.

"Nice office, Art," she said, whistling softly as she took in the panoramic view of Lake Zürich. "They certainly treat you better than your family did."

"What are you doing in Switzerland, Chloe?" I asked, standing up and motioning toward the seating area. "Last I checked, you were knee-deep in federal depositions in Illinois."

Chloe dropped her backpack onto the coffee table with a heavy thud, unzipped it, and pulled out a sleek, titanium-encased external drive.

"The depositions wrapped up faster than expected because the entire co-conspirator network imploded like a house of cards," she grinned, tossing the drive onto my desk. "When Brenda realized her husband was hiding millions in secret offshore accounts while letting her take the fall, she started singing like a canary. She gave the feds every single name, password, and encrypted server location she could remember."

"And my father?" I asked quietly.

"Under house arrest pending trial, awaiting medical clearance from the hospital," Chloe said, her expression softening slightly. "He tried to liquidate his last remaining retirement fund yesterday, only to discover that the account was completely empty. Turns out, the mastermind behind Global Asset Holdings—a guy named Victor Sterling—emptied out all the subsidiary accounts before fleeing to Europe three days ago."

I froze. "Victor Sterling? As in *Vance & Sterling Partners*?"

May you like

Chloe nodded grimly. "Bingo. The firm you’re currently working for? It’s the parent holding company for the entire international laundering syndicate. Director K isn't just an interested observer, Art. She’s Victor Sterling’s primary legal counsel. You didn't get hired by an independent Swiss auditing firm. You walked straight into the lion's den."
