Chapter 14 - A Dinner of Broken Glass

The private dining room at *L'Espalier* was the epitome of old-world Boston elegance: crystal chandeliers, velvet-draped windows overlooking Back Bay, and soft classical string music playing in the background. Clara sat across from Nico, her heart fluttering as she watched the candlelight dance across his striking features. They were celebrating a massive milestone—Winter & Rye had just been named "Best Bakery of the Year" by the city's premier culinary magazine.

"To the hardest-working woman in Massachusetts," Nico said, raising his crystal flute of vintage champagne. His dark eyes softened as they met hers across the small table. "May your flour never run out and your ambition never wane."

Clara clinked her glass against his, her smile radiant. "And to the man who taught me that I didn't have to break my back just to survive."

Before Nico could reply, the heavy double doors of the private dining alcove clicked open. A waiter stepped in, looking visibly flustered, holding a silver tray with a single, heavy envelope resting on it.

"Pardon the interruption, Mr. Vale, Mrs. Vale," the waiter stammered, casting a nervous glance at Nico. "This was just delivered to the front desk by a courier. He insisted it be given to Mrs. Vale immediately."

Clara frowned, setting her champagne glass down. She picked up the envelope. It was heavy, cream-colored cardstock, addressed to *Mrs. Clara Vale* in stark, printed block letters. There was no return address.

Nico’s demeanor shifted in a fraction of a second. The relaxed, affectionate husband vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless corporate titan. "Leave it, James," Nico commanded the waiter, his voice dropping into a tone that brooked no argument. The waiter scurried out of the room, closing the door behind him with a soft click.

"Nico, what is this?" Clara asked, her fingers hesitating over the flap.

"Open it, Clara," Nico said quietly, leaning forward, his eyes narrowed into dark slits of calculation. "Whatever is inside, remember that you are safe. Nothing in this world can touch you while I’m breathing."

Clara swallowed hard and tore the envelope open. She pulled out a single sheet of heavy paper. Printed across the center was a chilling message, accompanied by a scanned photograph of her walking out of Winter & Rye earlier that afternoon:

*Enjoy your little award, Mrs. Vale. It’s a long way down from Beacon Hill back to the gutter. And your husband can't protect you from every ghost.*
