Chapter 18 - The Fall of the House of Vance

Julian Vance paled visibly at the sight of Nico. For all his arrogance, Julian knew the golden rule of Boston high finance: *Never step into the cage of a starved wolf.*

"N-Nico," Julian stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating. "This... this is a routine regulatory matter. Your wife’s business—"

"My wife’s business," Nico interrupted, his voice smooth as silk yet heavy as a falling anvil, "is cleaner, more profitable, and infinitely more successful than anything you have ever touched in your miserable, parasitic life, Julian."

"Mr. Vale, we have reports of—" one of the health inspectors started, lifting his clipboard.

Nico didn't even look at the inspector. Instead, he pulled a folded legal document from his overcoat pocket and tossed it onto the marble pastry counter. It landed with a sharp, definitive slap.

"You might want to read that before you open your mouth, Inspector," Nico said coldly. "That is an injunction filed twenty minutes ago by the Massachusetts State Superior Court. Furthermore, it details the immediate, federally mandated foreclosure on every single commercial asset, bank account, and shell company currently registered to Julian Vance and his associates."

Julian gasped, stumbling back a step. "That's... that's impossible! My debt isn't due for another eighteen months!"

"It was," Nico agreed calmly, stepping forward so he towered over Julian by a full head. "Until your little illegal sabotage scheme breached the fiduciary covenants of your primary lenders. Who do you think bought up your debt portfolio, Julian? Who do you think owns the very ground your penthouse sits on?"

Julian stared at Nico in absolute horror, his lips moving silently as the terrifying realization crashed over him. "You... you set me up."

"I didn't set you up," Nico corrected, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "You tried to bite the hand that fed you, and now you’re starving in the snow. Miller?"

From behind the counter, Detective Miller stepped forward, accompanied by two federal marshals in plainclothes. "Julian Vance, you’re under arrest for corporate espionage, wire fraud, and extortion. Turn around and put your hands behind your back."

As the handcuffs clicked shut around Julian’s wrists and he was dragged out into the freezing Boston snow, the bakery fell into a stunned, awestruck silence. Clara looked up at her husband, her eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief, profound relief, and burning, fierce love.
