Chapter 24 - The Invitation to the Vance Legacy

Three weeks had passed since the terrifying intrusion on New Year’s Eve. Boston had thawed slightly, though patches of stubborn, gray snow still clung to the shaded corners of Charles Street. Inside the Vale estate, life had returned to a tense, cautious normalcy, bolstered by state-of-the-art biometric security upgrades that Nico had personally overseen.
Clara sat at her restored mahogany desk at the historic accounting firm, double-checking the quarterly audit for a prominent Beacon Hill heritage foundation. Her life had transformed completely; she was no longer the overworked, underpaid assistant hiding from bill collectors. She was a respected partner now, her brilliance finally recognized and rewarded.
The brass bell above the boutique office door chimed softly, breaking her concentration. A courier in a charcoal uniform stepped inside, holding a heavy, cream-colored envelope sealed with dark crimson wax—a crest she recognized instantly.
"Delivery for Ms. Clara Vance," the courier said politely, setting the envelope on her desk.
Clara’s breath hitched. *Vance.* Even though Julian was locked away in a high-security federal penitentiary awaiting trial, the name still carried a toxic weight in Boston.
"Are you sure this is for me?" she asked, hesitant to touch it.
"Addressed directly to you, ma'am. Signature required."
With a trembling hand, Clara signed the digital pad, took the envelope, and waited until the courier left before breaking the seal. Inside was a thick cardstock letter, written in elegant, old-fashioned fountain pen ink. It wasn't from Julian. It was from his estranged older sister, Eleanor Vance-Montgomery—a woman who had long distanced herself from the family’s criminal enterprises and lived in self-imposed exile in Newport, Rhode Island.
*“Dear Clara,”* the letter began. *“I know my family has brought you nothing but terror and grief. But there is a legacy left buried beneath the rubble of what Julian destroyed—one that rightfully belongs to those who possess integrity. Meet me this Friday at the Fairmont Copley Plaza. Come alone. Your future, and Nico’s true origins, depend on it.”*

Clara’s blood ran cold. Nico’s origins? What did Eleanor Vance know about Nico Vale that even Nico himself might have missed?
