Chapter 21 - The Ghost of Beacon Hill

The sharp, metallic tang of ozone and splintered mahogany hung thick in the air of the grand foyer. Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird as she crept to the edge of the second-floor landing, her bare feet making no sound against the Persian runner. Below, the sprawling shadows cast by the dying city lights stretched like skeletal fingers across the marble floor.

"Step out of the shadows, Julian," Nico’s voice cut through the darkness, devoid of fear, laced only with a lethal, coiled promise of violence. He stood halfway down the sweeping staircase, one hand casually resting on the polished banister, completely unbothered by the intruder holding a suppressed firearm in the gloom.

A low, guttural chuckle echoed from the darkness near the coat rack. A figure stepped forward, the amber streetlamp catching the sharp angles of a face that Clara hadn't seen since the federal trial that sent shockwaves through Boston’s financial district. Julian Vance—emaciated, his tailored suit rumpled and stained with sleet, his eyes wild and bloodshot—raised the barrel of the gun slightly, though his hands trembled violently.

"Surprised, Nico?" Julian hissed, his voice cracking with exhaustion and madness. "You thought you could bury me under a mountain of SEC violations, strip my assets, and leave me to rot in a federal holding cell while you played happily ever after with my former accountant? You took everything from me, Vale. My name, my empire, my dignity!"

Clara gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth. Julian Vance wasn't just a disgraced executive; he was a desperate animal backed into a corner, and animals lashed out blindly.

Nico didn't flinch. He didn't even blink. "You built your empire on fraud, extortion, and the ruined lives of people like Clara," Nico replied, his tone dropping an octave, turning glacial. "I merely dismantled what was already rotting from the inside out. And as for breaking out of a maximum-security transport? That’s going to add another twenty years to your sentence, Julian, assuming you survive the next five minutes."

Julian's manic laugh bounced off the high ceiling. "I'm not going back to prison! If I'm going down, I’m taking the crown jewel of Boston with me—and the little mouse who helped you steal it!"

With a sudden, explosive movement, Julian jerked the gun upward, aiming directly past Nico toward the landing where Clara stood frozen in terror.
