Chapter 17 - The Storm Breaks at Noon

The lunch rush at Winter & Rye was in full swing. The bakery was filled with the rich, buttery aroma of fresh croissants and roasting coffee beans. Clara was behind the counter, laughing as she handed a warm cinnamon brioche to a regular customer, when the brass bell above the door jingled sharply.
Three men in sharp, dark suits walked in. Leading them was not a health inspector, but Julian Vance himself—looking smug, arrogant, and dressed in a bespoke Italian suit that screamed entitlement. Behind him were two local health department officials holding clipboards.
"Well, well, well," Julian announced loudly, his voice cutting through the cheerful hum of the bakery. He strolled right up to the counter, flashing a cruel, triumphant smirk. "I must say, Mrs. Vale, it’s impressive how long you managed to play house in Beacon Hill. But playtime is over."

A murmur of laughter rippled through the waiting customers, flushing Julian’s pale cheeks with an angry red tint. "Brat," he hissed under his breath, stepping closer. He signaled to the health inspectors. "Conduct a full, aggressive audit of the back kitchens immediately. I have verified reports of severe health code violations, contaminated dairy imports, and fraudulent supplier documentation. Shut this place down!"
The health inspectors stepped forward, looking uncomfortable under Clara’s icy gaze. "Mrs. Vale, by order of the—"
"By order of whom, exactly?"

A rich, resonant, terrifyingly calm voice echoed from the doorway.
The temperature in the bakery plummeted instantly. Every head turned as Nico Vale stepped inside. He wore his signature tailored charcoal overcoat, his silver-threaded hair catching the midday light. He walked slowly, deliberately, like a king inspecting his domain, until he stood right beside Clara, wrapping a possessive, protective arm around her waist.
