Chapter 23 - The Remnants of the Storm

The adrenaline crash was instantaneous and brutal. By 3:00 AM, the Boston Police Department and federal agents had cleared the scene, hauling Julian Vance away in a heavily armored transport vehicle. The shattered front door had been temporarily boarded up with heavy plywood by the emergency detail, sealing out the howling New Year wind, but the physical breach had left an invisible, jagged scar on the sanctuary of the Beacon Hill townhouse.
Clara sat wrapped in a thick cashmere blanket on the oversized sofa in the study, a steaming mug of chamomile tea growing cold between her trembling hands. The cut on Nico’s temple had been cleaned and bandaged—a sharp, stark contrast against his pale, unyielding skin.
Nico stood by the tall, arched window, staring out into the blinding white blizzard that had resumed its assault on the city. His back was to her, his broad shoulders tense beneath the fabric of his dark shirt.
"You should try to sleep, Clara," Nico said softly, his voice gravelly as he didn't turn around. "The worst is over. Federal marshals will be guarding the perimeter indefinitely. No one will ever touch you again."
Clara set her mug down on the coffee table with a soft clatter. She stood up, walking across the hardwood floor, and stopped just behind him. Without a word, she wrapped her arms around his waist, pressing her cheek against the solid wall of his back.
Nico stiffened for a fraction of a second before exhaling a long, shuddering breath. He turned around, pulling her fully into his embrace, burying his face in the crook of her neck.
"I was terrified," Clara whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears. "Not for myself. For you. When I saw him pull that gun... when I saw the blood on your face... I realized how fragile all of this is. How easily everything could be ripped away."
Nico pulled back slightly, cupping her face in his large, warm hands, forcing her to look up into his piercing dark eyes. "Listen to me, Clara. I am not easily broken. And I will burn this entire city to ash before I let anyone take you from me. What we have wasn't bought with luck; it was forged in the fire. We survived the worst Christmas of our lives, and we will survive this."
She managed a fragile, watery smile, placing her hand over his. "Happy New Year, Nico."

A slow, genuine smile broke through his stern expression, softening the sharp, dangerous lines of his face. "Happy New Year, my love. Let's go to bed. Safe, this time."
