Chapter 30 - The Knock on the Midnight Door

The fallout was seismic. Within forty-eight hours, the collapse of Sterling Capital dominated every major news outlet across the country. Arthur Sterling was denied bail, facing multiple federal indictments for financial fraud, racketeering, and decades-old arson charges. The ghost of Nico’s past had finally been laid to rest.

Midnight had fallen over Beacon Hill once again. The snow had stopped, leaving Charles Street blanketed in a pristine, untouched layer of white under a pale winter moon.

Inside the study of the Vale townhouse, the fire crackled warmly in the marble hearth. Clara sat curled up in Nico’s lap in the oversized leather armchair, her head resting comfortably against his chest as the rhythmic, powerful thrum of his heartbeat echoed beneath her ear.

"It's finally over, isn't it?" Clara murmured softly, closing her eyes as Nico’s fingers gently tangled in her hair.

"It's over," Nico whispered, pressing a lingering kiss to the crown of her head. "The ledger is closed. The debt is paid."

Clara smiled, wrapping her arms securely around his waist. "I don't think I'll ever need to make another wish again. Everything I ever dreamed of—safety, a home, love—is right here."

Nico smiled, tightening his arms around her as the grandfather clock in the hallway began to chime the midnight hour.

Before the final chime could fade away into the quiet night, however, a sharp, urgent sound pierced the peaceful stillness of the townhouse.

*Knock. Knock. Knock.*

It wasn't the heavy, desperate smashing of an intruder this time. It was a single, deliberate, rhythmic knocking coming from the front door down on the ground floor.

Nico froze. The relaxed, tender warmth in his dark eyes vanished instantly, replaced once again by razor-sharp alertness. He shifted Clara gently off his lap, standing up and reaching instinctively for his inner coat pocket where his concealed weapon rested.

Clara’s breath hitched in her throat, a sudden, cold dread pooling in her stomach. "Nico? At this hour? Who could possibly know we're here, or dare to—"

Before she could finish, a heavy thud echoed from the foyer below, followed by the slow, mechanical click of the front door’s biometric lock being overridden from the outside by a master code—a code that only one person in existence besides Nico possessed.

Nico’s face turned carved-stone rigid as a shadowy figure stepped slowly into the foyer light downstairs, holding a sealed manila envelope marked with a single handwritten word: *‘Contingency.’*
