Chapter 13 - Ethan’s Voice

The family court assigned Dr. Aris Thorne, a renowned child psychologist and court-appointed custody evaluator, to conduct an independent interview with Ethan.

I drove Ethan to Dr. Thorne’s warm, sunlit office on Friday morning. I sat in the waiting room, holding my breath, as Ethan walked inside carrying his drawing pad and his yellow box of markers.

For an hour, Dr. Thorne talked with Ethan, asking him to draw pictures of his family, his house, and his bedroom.

When the door finally opened, Dr. Thorne walked out into the waiting room, holding Ethan’s sketchbook in his hands. His expression was grave and deeply serious.

"Ms. Vance," Dr. Thorne said, gesturing toward his private office after Ethan was settled with a toy in the corner. "I’ve completed my evaluation."

"How is he?" I asked, my heart in my throat.

Dr. Thorne laid three drawings on his desk.

The first drawing showed Ethan standing inside a tiny black box with a tears running down his face. Outside the box stood Linda and Ryan, holding hands near a giant sparkling castle.

"Ethan told me," Dr. Thorne spoke softly, "that his grandmother told him he was 'too loud and took up too much space.' He said his father told him that if he complained about losing his room, he would be sent away to live in a boarding school."

I gasped, pulling my hand to my mouth. "Ryan told him what?!"

"He was terrified, Sarah," Dr. Thorne said, his eyes filled with professional outrage. "This child has suffered clear psychological manipulation and emotional neglect from his father and grandmother. My report to the family court judge will strictly recommend zero unsupervised visitation for Ryan Miller, and a total protection order against Linda Miller."

I closed my eyes, tears of relief and pain spilling onto my cheeks.

My son’s voice had been heard.
