Chapter 4 - The Golden Boy’s Delusion

At 1:00 AM, the lights at 442 Oakridge Drive were all brightly lit.

Ryan unlocked the front door, shaking rain off his umbrella. He was exhausted after a long day at the corporate office, expecting to find Sarah sitting at the kitchen island waiting to hand him a warm plate of dinner while they had their usual passive-aggressive negotiation.

Instead, the house was dead quiet.

The grocery bags Sarah had dropped earlier were still lying near the entryway. The carton of strawberries had been kicked against the baseboard, staining the pale wood red.

"Sarah?" Ryan called out, setting his briefcase down. "Sarah, come on. Stop playing games."

No answer.

From the top of the stairs, Linda emerged wearing a silk robe, holding a glass of white wine. "She isn't here, Ryan. She packed up her car and ran off like a spoiled brat hours ago. Left the groceries right on the floor for me to clean up."

Ryan pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling a headache coming on. "She took Ethan?"

"Of course she took him! Using that boy as a emotional bargaining chip, as usual," Linda sneered, sipping her wine as she walked down the stairs. "Honestly, Ryan, you need to put your foot down. I'm your mother. I raised you. It’s entirely reasonable that I have the master guest suite upstairs while I stay here for the winter. Ethan can sleep in the den—he's eight! He doesn't even notice these things!"

"I know, Mom, I know," Ryan muttered, walking toward the kitchen to grab a beer. "She's just emotional. She'll be back tomorrow morning once she cools off. She always comes back."

He opened the refrigerator, pulled out a bottle, and turned around—only to freeze.

Taped to the front of the refrigerator door with a piece of blue painter's tape was a crisp, formal legal notice printed on heavy ivory paper.

At the top stood the embossed seal of Vance, Sterling & Associates — Attorneys at Law.

Ryan’s brow furrowed. He pulled the paper down and began reading:

NOTICE OF REVOCATION OF OCCUPANCY LICENCE & BREACH OF TRUST

To: Ryan Thomas Miller & Linda Miller Notice is hereby served that effective 12:01 AM, all temporary residence rights at 442 Oakridge Drive are officially revoked under Section 4B of the Sarah Vance-Miller Irrevocable Property Trust. You are ordered to vacate the premises within 72 hours...

Ryan stared at the document, his heart suddenly hammering against his ribs. "What... what is this?"

"What's what, dear?" Linda asked, walking over with her wine glass.

"This document," Ryan stammered, his face turning pale under the bright kitchen lights. "It’s... it’s an eviction notice."

Linda burst out laughing. "An eviction notice? In your house? Sarah has lost her mind! You bought this house, Ryan! Tell her lawyers to go to hell!"

Ryan didn't answer. His hand began to shake as he remembered the stack of paperwork he had blindly signed eight years ago in Arthur Vance's corner office, just three days before their wedding.

He had signed it without reading the fine print because Sarah’s father had paid the entire $1.2 million purchase price in cash. Ryan had assumed it was just a standard prenuptial formality.

He had completely forgotten what that paperwork actually said.
