Chapter 20 - A New Dawn

The sun was setting in brilliant hues of orange, gold, and pink over the backyard of the Oakridge estate.
Clara, Arthur Vance, and several of our closest friends were gathered on the back patio, enjoying a warm weekend barbecue. The sound of laughter and clinking glasses filled the evening air.
Out on the green lawn, Ethan was running around with Clara’s dog, holding a toy airplane in his hand, his laughter echoing across the yard.
I stood near the patio steps, holding a warm glass of lemonade, watching my son play.
He didn't look back over his shoulder. He didn't look scared. He didn't worry about where he belonged or whether he took up too much space. He knew he was loved, protected, and safe.
My phone chimed in my pocket. It was a notification from my agency dashboard—another successful milestone hit, another project completed. I closed the app, put the phone away, and walked out onto the grass toward Ethan.
"Mommy! Watch this!" Ethan shouted, running up to me and holding out a brand-new drawing he had finished earlier that afternoon.
It was a drawing of our house under a bright yellow sun. Inside the house were two figures—a little boy wearing a superhero cape, and a woman holding his hand under a giant golden crown.
At the bottom, written in crisp, proud third-grade lettering, were the words:
OUR HOME. FOREVER AND EVER.

I dropped to my knees, pulled my son into a warm, tight embrace, and kissed his cheek.
"Yes, baby," I whispered softly as the sunset washed over us in gold. "Forever and ever."
