Chapter 6 - Gaslighting in the Voicemail

The next forty-eight hours were a masterclass in modern gaslighting.
Ryan didn't stop calling. When I blocked his mobile number, he called from his work phone. When I blocked his work phone, he used Linda’s phone. When I blocked Linda’s phone, he started leaving long, frantic voicemails from unknown numbers.
Voicemail 1 (Saturday, 2:15 PM): "Sarah, you are completely out of your mind. Do you know how embarrassed I am? My mother spent three hours crying on the patio! She has high blood pressure! If anything happens to her health, I am holding you personally responsible. Unblock me now."
Voicemail 2 (Saturday, 6:40 PM): "Look, I talked to a lawyer friend of mine. He said that trust document won't hold up in court. You can't just kick a husband out of his martial residence! We built a life here! Stop listening to your father's old dinosaur attorney and bring Ethan home for dinner."
Voicemail 3 (Sunday, 11:10 AM): "Sarah, please... I'm begging you. Don't do this to our family. What are people going to say at the country club? What is my boss going to think if he finds out I got evicted by my own wife? Think about my career! Think about Ethan having a broken home!"
I listened to every single voicemail sitting at Clara’s kitchen table while Ethan sat beside me, happily drawing new dinosaur pictures with a fresh set of markers Clara had bought him.
He didn't ask about his old room once. He didn't ask about his father. He was quiet, peaceful, and felt safe.
"He doesn't care about Ethan," Clara said softly, handing me a glass of water as the third voicemail ended. "He only cares about his reputation and his mother's comfort."
"I know," I said, hitting save on the audio recording file. "That's why I'm going to take everything else away from him, too."
On Sunday afternoon, I met with my digital operations team via Zoom. As a freelance content strategist and digital media consultant, I managed high-profile branding accounts and ran several successful online publications.
For years, I had quietly used my digital marketing skills to boost Ryan’s boutique real estate firm, writing his promotional copy, managing his social media presence, and sending high-net-worth clients his way.

I opened my laptop, accessed his company's media portal, and removed my administrative access. Then, I pulled down every single custom branding asset, marketing campaign, and client lead database I had built for him over the last five years.
If Ryan wanted to treat me like an unpaid housemaid and my son like an inconvenient tenant, he was about to find out exactly how much my professional expertise had been keeping his career afloat.
