Chapter 17 - Checkmate in the Clouds

The rotor wash whipped my hair across my face, but my stance remained as unyielding as granite. "You're right about one thing, Thomas," I shouted back, stepping closer with the cold, calculated calm of an executioner. "This is a game. And your king has already been taken off the board." At my signal, the heavy steel access doors behind the helicopter slammed open. Federal agents in tactical gear, led by Marcus, poured onto the roof, their weapons raised and laser sights painting a constellation of red dots across Thomas’s chest and the pilot's windshield. The pilot immediately threw up his hands in surrender, cutting the engines as the massive blades began to slow down with a heavy, dying whine. Thomas dropped his duffel bag, falling heavily to his knees as the cold steel cuffs clicked into place around his wrists. He looked up at me with absolute terror, finally realizing that the quiet, grieving widow he had underestimated was the architects of his ultimate downfall. I walked past him without a word, my heels clicking sharply against the concrete helipad, looking out over the magnificent skyline of Manhattan as the city lights twinkled like distant, indifferent stars. The syndicate thought they could hide in the shadows of high society, but I had brought the dawn, and the light was blinding.
