Chapter 7 - The Trap Sprung

The crimson emergency strobe lights painted the sterile white walls of Lab 4 in jagged strokes of shadow and blood-red luminescence. Marcus moved silently along the left perimeter, his fingers dancing across his mobile tactical pad as he worked to bypass the automated lockdown protocol Alistair had triggered.
"The ventilation system is venting halon gas!" Marcus whispered urgently, coughing as a faint, sweet chemical smell began to drift from the ceiling grates. "He's trying to knock us out and incinerate the lab to cover his tracks!"
"Don't panic. He's relying on automated scripts," I said, keeping my eyes fixed on the central security observation booth suspended above the laboratory floor. Through the reinforced one-way glass, a faint silhouette of a man sat behind a bank of glowing monitors.
Alistair's voice echoed through the intercom again, laced with growing impatience. "Save your breath, Clara. The halon concentration is reaching critical mass. In sixty seconds, a single spark from that quantum mainframe will turn this entire room into a crematorium. Say hello to Julian for me!"
"Alistair," I spoke into the open-air microphone on the central console, my voice unnervingly calm, almost conversational. "Did you really think Julian didn't anticipate your betrayal?"
The intercom crackled with a sudden, confused pause. "What are you talking about?"
"Julian knew you were selling our defense algorithms to foreign syndicates a year ago," I continued, pacing slowly across the smooth floor while keeping Alistair's attention fixed. "He didn't just fire you. He built a digital honeypot specifically designed to trap your signature the moment you tried to access our mainframes again."
"Lies! There is no honeypot! I wiped the servers!" Alistair shouted, his calm demeanor suddenly fracturing into panic.
"You wiped what Julian wanted you to see," I smiled in the darkness. "Marcus, execute protocol nine."
Marcus slammed his hand down onto the central console's master override button.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.
The red emergency strobes instantly shifted to a blinding, piercing blue. The automated locking bolts on the observation booth door snapped back with a loud, mechanical pop. The ventilation fans reversed direction instantly, sucking the deadly halon gas out of the room and clearing the air within seconds.
"No! That's impossible! The encryption keys were mine!" Alistair shrieked from above.
Heavy footsteps pounded down the metal staircase leading from the observation booth as Alistair scrambled frantically toward the exit, clutching a hard drive to his chest. He burst through the glass door, sprinting toward the primary airlock.
He didn't make it two steps before Marcus swept his leg out in a clean, fluid motion, sending Alistair crashing hard onto the steel floor. The hard drive slipped from his grip, sliding across the polished tiles until it stopped right at the toe of my shoe.
I bent down, picked up the hard drive, and slipped it calmly into my blazer pocket. Then, I looked down at Alistair, who was gasping for air, clutching his bruised ribs.
"You're... you're a monster," Alistair wheezed, glaring up at me with sheer hatred.

"No, Alistair," I said softly, stepping over him as federal security agents, alerted by Marcus's silent alarm, poured into the lab through the open doors. "I'm just a mother protecting her child's legacy."
As federal agents hauled Alistair away in handcuffs, the digital display on the main laboratory wall flashed a bright, steady green. The threat was neutralized. The conspiracy was fully exposed.
