Chapter 37 - The Empty Chair at the Table

Two weeks later, the annual Sterling Enterprises charity gala was held in the grand ballroom of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel—just blocks away from where the nightmare at the Waldorf Astoria had begun nearly a year ago.
The ballroom was breathtaking, filled with cascades of white roses, twinkling crystal chandeliers, and the soft, elegant strains of a live string quartet playing Vivaldi. The city’s elite, cultural leaders, and philanthropic pioneers mingled in glittering gowns and tailored tuxedos, their expressions a mix of genuine respect and cautious admiration as they looked toward the stage.
I stood backstage, adjusting the collar of my midnight-blue silk evening gown. It was a custom piece, elegant and commanding, but designed entirely on my own terms. No forced extravagance, no vulgar displays of stolen wealth. Just pure, undeniable strength.
"You look stunning, Evelyn," Marcus said, stepping up beside me in a sharp, tailored tuxedo. "The press is swarming out there. Every major news outlet from here to New York wants an exclusive interview about the restructuring of the foundation."
"Let them talk," I smiled, picking up my notes from the mahogany podium. "Today isn't about interviews, Marcus. Today is about rewriting the narrative."
As the house lights dimmed slightly, a polite hush fell over the crowded ballroom. The Master of Ceremonies stepped up to the microphone, his voice ringing clear through the state-of-the-art sound system.
"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and friends of the Sterling Foundation," the MC announced warmly. "It is my absolute honor to introduce a woman who has not only redefined corporate integrity, but who stands as a testament to the unyielding power of maternal love, resilience, and justice. Please welcome our Chief Executive Officer and Chairperson, Mrs. Evelyn Sterling."
A wave of thunderous, sustained applause erupted through the ballroom. Hundreds of people stood to their feet, turning toward the stage as the spotlights swept across the crimson velvet curtains.

I took a slow, deep breath, squared my shoulders, and stepped out into the brilliant, dazzling light.
