Chapter 34 - The Trap is Sprung

"I knew you'd come," Arthur Vance said without turning around. His voice was smooth, cultured, carrying the effortless arrogance of a man who believed the world existed solely to serve his ambitions.

He slowly turned away from the console, his silver hair neatly combed, his tailored Brioni suit unwrinkled despite the subterranean chill of the bunker. A faint, condescending smile played at the corners of his thin lips as he looked past me to where Marcus stood holding his rifle leveled dead at Vance’s chest.

"Put the gun down, Mr. Reynolds," Vance said dismissively, walking slowly toward us with his hands tucked casually into his trouser pockets. "Killing me won't stop what’s already in motion. The system is decentralized. If my heart stops beating, dead-man switches activate across twelve international jurisdictions, automatically releasing every compromising document on every global political figure, corporate titan, and high-ranking judge in the Western world. Total chaos. A global reset."

"You always did overestimate your own importance, Arthur," I said, stepping forward out of the shadows, my voice cutting through the hum of the servers like a razor.

Vance’s eyes flicked to me, a flicker of genuine surprise finally breaking through his mask of aristocratic composure. "Evelyn. I must admit, Richard was a fool to underestimate you. He thought you were just a quiet little mouse he could bully into signing away her inheritance at the Waldorf. But you... you’re something entirely different."

"Richard was a symptom of a diseased system," I replied coldly, closing the distance between us until only a few feet of polished concrete separated us. "You created him, Arthur. Just like you created Victoria’s greed, and just like you created the syndicate that bled my husband dry before orchestrating his so-called 'accident' on the yacht."

Vance’s smile vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating glare. "My dear girl, accidents happen in our world. Men like your husband get ambitious. They try to step outside the lines we draw for them. When David tried to audit the Trust’s hidden accounts, he made a fatal error. Just as you are making a fatal error right now."

"Am I?" I reached into the pocket of my coat, pulled out the quantum relay device, and slammed it down onto the holographic console between us.

Before Vance could react, the device flared with a blinding white light. A series of aggressive diagnostic codes cascaded across the massive main screen, overriding the local administrative protocols with terrifying speed.

"What did you do?!" Vance roared, lunging forward with a desperate look in his eyes, his aristocratic facade shattering completely.

Marcus stepped in instantly, the butt of his rifle catching Vance sharply across the shoulder and sending him sprawling hard onto the concrete floor.

"You didn't just build a decentralized network, Arthur," I said, looking down at him as the download progress bar hit 99%. "You tied every single shell company, every bribe, and every illicit transaction back to a master biometric key stored on *your* personal neural implant. The same implant the doctors put in after your stroke three years ago."

The main screen flashed a brilliant emerald green. *DOWNLOAD COMPLETE. ALL ASSETS FROZEN. ROUTED TO INTERPOL AND FEDERAL PROSECUTORS.*

Sirens began to wail throughout the bunker, deafening and harsh, as the red emergency lighting kicked in, bathing the server room in a wash of crimson blood. The game was over. The Council was blind, deaf, and completely exposed.
