Chapter 27 - Descent into the Vault

The subterranean entrance to the *Vander & Cie* underground facility was concealed behind the unassuming facade of a historic watchmaking workshop in the heart of Geneva's old town. We descended three flights of reinforced concrete stairs behind Director Hayes, our footsteps echoing hollowly against the damp stone walls until we reached a massive, four-foot-thick titanium blast door guarded by two armed Swiss federal tactical officers.
"This is it," Hayes whispered, sliding his security card through the biometric scanner while pressing his thumb against the glass reader. With a deep, mechanical groan of heavy hydraulics, the massive steel door swung slowly inward, revealing a long, brilliantly lit corridor lined with humming server racks and state-of-the-art quantum processing units.
"We have exactly twelve minutes before the automated security protocol detects our override sequence," Marcus said, rapidly typing commands into his tactical laptop as he connected it directly to the facility's primary network port. "Once I initiate the master download, the council's entire global database will be mirrored to our secure federal servers back in Washington."
I stood beside him, watching the lines of green data stream furiously down the monitor, my eyes scanning for any sign of external interference. "Keep your guard up. A system this massive won't go down without fighting back."
Suddenly, the brilliant white fluorescent lights overhead flickered violently, turning from white to a deep, ominous crimson. A shrill, deafening alarm wailed through the subterranean corridor, echoing off the concrete walls with disorienting intensity.
"System breach!" a synthesized robotic voice echoed across the intercom system. "Initiating emergency data purge. All external ports locked."
"They found us!" Marcus shouted, his fingers flying across the keyboard with frantic speed. "Someone from the Zurich headquarters just triggered a remote firewall quarantine! They're wiping the mainframe from an off-site terminal!"
"Can you stop it?" I demanded, stepping closer to the screen.
"Not from here! The remote override is locked behind a secondary encryption key located in the executive penthouse suite directly above us!" Marcus slammed his hand onto the desk in frustration. "If we don't get that key within ninety seconds, every file we came for will be permanently erased into the digital void!"

Without a moment's hesitation, I turned sharply toward the heavy steel staircase leading upward to the executive levels. "Then we go up. Cover the download, Marcus!"
"Evelyn, wait! It's a trap!" Marcus shouted after me, but I was already sprinting up the concrete steps, my heart pounding with fierce adrenaline, ready to face whatever shadows awaited me at the top.
