Chapter 40 - The Shadow on the Horizon

The drive back to the estate was peaceful, the snow-dusted pine trees whispering in the cool mountain breeze as our vehicle glided smoothly up the private, gated drive. The grand house stood tall against the starlit sky, glowing with a warm, inviting amber light from every window—a true home at last, safe, secure, and filled with love.

I carried a sleeping Lily upstairs, her small head resting comfortably against my shoulder, her breathing soft and even. I gently tucked her into her own bed, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead and pressing a tender kiss to her cheek.

"Sleep tight, my sweet angel," I whispered. "Mommy’s right here. Nothing will ever hurt you again."

Leaving the bedroom door cracked open just an inch, I walked quietly down the polished oak hallway toward my private study to finish reviewing the final batch of foundation transfer documents. The house was blissfully quiet, wrapped in a blanket of absolute stillness.

I sat down at the mahogany desk, flicked on the classic brass reading lamp, and opened the leather-bound ledger. But before my pen could touch the paper, something caught my eye on the screen of my personal laptop resting beside the desk.

The screen flickered once. Twice.

Then, without any user input, a single text file opened automatically on the desktop. The cursor blinked rhythmically against the stark white background, and a series of letters began to type themselves out in real-time, character by character, with terrifying speed:

*WELCOME HOME, EVELYN. DID YOU REALLY THINK IT WOULD END WITH VANCE? THE GAME HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN.*

May you like

My breath hitched in my throat. My fingers froze over the keyboard as a cold, electric shiver raced down my spine. Slowly, deliberately, the webcam indicator light on the top of the laptop flared into a bright, piercing green.

From the hallway outside Lily’s bedroom, a soft, deliberate sound echoed through the quiet house—the unmistakable, slow creak of floorboards shifting beneath the weight of an approaching footstep.
