Chapter 26 - The Council in the Shadows

Three days later, Marcus and I boarded a private Gulfstream jet bound for Geneva, Switzerland, operating under strict federal protection and utilizing encrypted communication channels. The digital footprint we had uncovered in Jonathan’s master ledger pointed directly to a Swiss banking conglomerate—*Vander & Cie*—which served as the financial clearinghouse for the global shadow council mentioned in the mysterious letter.

The flight across the Atlantic was tense and silent. I spent the entire journey reviewing the encrypted files we had managed to salvage, cross-referencing account numbers with international shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands and Liechtenstein. Every line of code represented a hidden vein of global corruption, connecting politicians, arms dealers, and corporate titans in an unbreakable web of mutual blackmail.

When our private jet touched down on the tarmac at Geneva International Airport, a sleek, bulletproof black Mercedes was waiting on the airstrip, its engine idling quietly in the freezing mist. A tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal suit stood beside the rear door, holding a small digital tablet displaying our security clearance codes.

"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Sterling," the man said in a crisp, neutral accent as we stepped out of the aircraft. "My name is Director Hayes. I represent the international financial crimes task force stationed here in Geneva. We’ve been tracking *Vander & Cie* for over five years, but we lacked the concrete proof required to breach their Swiss charter protections. Your evidence changes everything."

"We didn't come here to hand over evidence for your archives, Director," I said coldly, sliding into the leather-lined interior of the Mercedes with Marcus right behind me. "We came to ensure that *Vander & Cie* is permanently eradicated before they can retaliate against my family."

Hayes climbed into the front passenger seat as the car accelerated smoothly down the private access road toward the city center. "I understand your urgency, Mrs. Sterling. But you must realize what we are dealing with. *Vander & Cie* is not just a bank; it is the financial heartbeat of the global syndicate. Their board of directors includes individuals who control sovereign debt, energy grids, and international trade routes. If we move too aggressively without securing their primary mainframe first, they will wipe every digital record clean within seconds."

"Then we secure the mainframe first," Marcus stated firmly, resting his hand on the encrypted tactical briefcase containing our master decryption keys. "Where is the physical server located?"

Hayes turned around in his seat, his expression grim as he looked back at us through the rearview mirror. "Three hundred meters beneath the streets of the old city, inside an impenetrable nuclear-hardened Swiss vault originally built during the Cold War. To get inside, we won't just need legal warrants. We’ll need a surgical strike from the inside out."
