Chapter 39 - The Sanctuary of Tomorrow

The gala stretched late into the evening, filled with laughter, music, and the quiet hum of genuine connection. For the first time in years, the Sterling name was no longer synonymous with scandal, greed, and fear. It stood for philanthropy, courage, and uncompromising justice.
By midnight, the ballroom had cleared, leaving only the soft rustle of cleaning crews packing away the floral arrangements and dimming the crystal chandeliers. Marcus and I stood together on the grand balcony overlooking the glittering, peaceful lights of the Seattle waterfront, the cool night breeze carrying the crisp scent of the ocean.
"You did it, Evelyn," Marcus said softly, resting his forearms against the stone railing as he lit a rare cigar. "The foundation is fully funded, the board is clean, and the legal cases against the remaining syndicate members are ironclad. It’s over."

I turned my head, looking out toward the dark, starlit horizon where the Pacific met the edge of the sky. A faint, fearless smile touched my lips. "Let them come, Marcus. If anyone ever tries to take what’s ours again, they won't find a grieving widow waiting in the dark. They’ll find an army."
Marcus chuckled, shaking his head with deep, unwavering respect. "I wouldn't bet against you, Evelyn. Not in a million years."

"Come on," I said, setting my glass down on a small marble table. "Let’s go home. Lily is waiting."
