Chapter 25 - The Echoes of the Past

The first week following Jonathan’s arrest passed in a whirlwind of legal depositions, asset recovery meetings, and federal debriefings. The once-feared Sterling conglomerate was systematically dismantled, its assets seized by the Department of Justice and earmarked for restitution funds to support the families whose lives the syndicate had destroyed over the decades.
I sat at the massive mahogany desk in my late husband’s private home office, reviewing the final audit reports of the philanthropic foundation he had secretly used as a front for offshore money laundering. Every page represented a calculated deception, a carefully constructed web of lies designed to hide corporate greed behind a facade of respectability.
A soft knock interrupted my concentration, and the heavy oak door creaked open. Marcus stepped inside, holding a thick, manila envelope stamped with a federal red wax seal.
"Interception report from the postal sorting facility downtown," Marcus said, placing the envelope carefully on the desk in front of me. "It was addressed to Jonathan's private P.O. box, but because all his mail is currently being rerouted through the federal receiver's office for investigation, the marshals flagged it immediately."
I frowned, picking up the envelope and inspecting the heavy, cream-colored paper. There was no return address, only my late husband's name written in sharp, precise cursive ink—an ink style that felt chillingly familiar.
"Open it," Marcus urged, pulling up a chair and sitting down opposite me.
Using a silver letter opener, I sliced open the top edge and slid out a single sheet of heavy parchment. Written across the center in that same sharp, elegant handwriting was a short, cryptic message:
*“You think you cut off the head of the snake, Evelyn, but you only woke the dragon. The European council has already convened. Your victory is nothing more than a temporary pause before the final reckoning.”*
There was no signature, only a small, embossed wax seal depicting a coiled serpent biting its own tail—the ancient insignia of the clandestine global council that Jonathan had often hinted at during his most paranoid drunken rants late at night.
"An intimidation tactic," Marcus said immediately, his eyes narrowing as he read over my shoulder. "Some remaining loyalist trying to rattle your cage now that Jonathan is locked away."
May you like
"No," I whispered, staring down at the serpent seal with a cold, racing pulse. "Jonathan genuinely believed in the council. He always claimed that his empire was just a localized branch of a much larger, invisible network operating across international borders. If this letter reached his P.O. box today, it means someone out there knows we have the master ledger—and they want it back."
Marcus’s expression hardened instantly. "Then we don't wait for them to make the next move. We take the fight straight to their doorstep."
