Chapter 13 - The Darkness Below

Down in the city’s drainage network, three miles from our home, the sound of rushing water echoed off the damp concrete walls like distant thunder. Brian held a heavy industrial flashlight in one hand and a set of long-handled bolt cutters in the other as he waded through the knee-deep, freezing water of the subterranean tunnel.
The coordinates Harold had left in the sub-basement journal weren't just a threat; they were a map.
His phone screen illuminated the dripping stone wall beside him. According to the schematic, the manual release lever for the Fourth Street junction was located behind a rusted iron service door marked *Sector 7-B*.
When Brian reached the door, he found it wasn't locked with a standard padlock. Instead, it was secured by a heavy, custom-built mechanical timer identical to the one Harold had used in our basement—a ticking mechanism with a digital display counting down the final minutes.
*00:04:12... 00:04:11...*
"Damn it," Brian muttered, shining his light on the complex array of gears and wires exposed behind the glass casing. There were no cutting pliers in the world that could bypass the internal tripwire without detonating the small explosive charge rigged to the release valve.
He pulled his phone from his pocket, dialing Miller’s number with trembling fingers.
"Miller! I'm at Sector 7-B," Brian shouted over the roar of the water. "There's a secondary charge rigged to the timer. If I cut the wrong wire, the whole bulkhead blows."
"Don't touch it, Davis!" Miller’s voice crackled through the speaker, half-drowned by static. "We just intercepted a transmission from Harold's holding cell. He didn't rig it to blow—he rigged it to lock permanently if the circuit is interrupted."

"Then how do I stop it?" Brian asked, staring at the glowing red numbers as they ticked down: *00:02:45... 00:02:44...*
"You have to enter the master override sequence from the architectural manual," Miller yelled. "The twenty-digit code from the nineteen-eighty-four survey!"
