Chapter 27 - The Blue Light in the Nursery

My heart stopped. The tablet on the patio table wasn't just displaying a camera feed; it was broadcasting real-time audio. Faintly, underneath the steady hum of the air purifier, came the unmistakable sound of a soft, slow lullaby being hummed in a raspy, unfamiliar voice.

"Chloe!" I screamed, dropping all caution as I sprinted back through the kitchen, abandoning the safety of Brian's side.

"Sarah, wait!" Brian shouted, chasing after me.

I tore down the hallway, my bare feet sliding across the floorboards, and threw open the door to Chloe’s bedroom. The room was bathed in the soft, ethereal blue glow of a nightlight. Chloe was still in her bed, her breathing steady beneath the heavy floral quilt, her face bandaged lightly with soothing burn salve. But standing right beside her bed, silhouetted against the window, was a tall figure wrapped in a heavy winter parka, the hood pulled deep over their face.

The intruder froze, turning their head slowly toward the doorway. Beneath the dark shadow of the hood, a pair of cold, unblinking eyes locked onto mine. It wasn't Harold—it was a younger man, broad-shouldered, wearing industrial work boots and holding a small, metallic canister with a nozzle pointed directly at Chloe’s oxygen mask.

"Don't take another step," the man rasped, his voice smooth, chillingly calm, and completely devoid of panic. "One move, and the valve opens. It’s not acid this time. It’s an aerosolized paralytic. Instant, painless, and completely untraceable by local coroners."

"Get away from her!" I shrieked, hysteria ripping through my throat like broken glass. I lunged forward, but a heavy hand grabbed my shoulder, yanking me backward.

It was Brian. He had entered the room silently, his gun raised, pressed flat against the doorframe, locked squarely on the intruder’s chest.

"Drop the canister," Brian commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a dark, terrifying register that I had never heard from him before. "Drop it, or I swear to God I will put a hollow-point right through your heart."

The intruder tilted his head, a strange, grim smile cutting across the lower half of his shadowed face. He didn't look afraid of the gun. He looked like a man who had already calculated the odds and decided he had nothing left to lose.

"You think Harold was the head of the snake, Mr. Cole?" the man chuckled softly, his eyes fixed on Brian. "Harold was just the face on the billboard. The foundation was poured thirty years ago. And you just invited us right back into the living room."
