Chapter 29 - The Smoke and the Chase

"Mask!" Brian yelled, grabbing my arm and yanking me back out into the hallway as the dense, chemical smoke billowed around us.

"Chloe! We left Chloe inside!" I screamed, thrashing against his grip, blinded by the stinging fumes.

"She’s in the oxygen tent, the air filter is sealed!" Brian shouted back, coughing violently as he kicked open the master bedroom window to vent the corridor.

Through the haze of the smoke, we heard the heavy thud of boots sprinting down the hallway toward the back stairs. The intruder was making his escape.

"Stay here!" Brian ordered, grabbing a heavy flash-light from the console table and charging headfirst into the gray smoke.

I didn't listen. I grabbed a wet towel from the master bathroom, pressed it tightly over my nose and mouth, and ran straight into Chloe’s nursery. The room was thick with the artificial fog, but the automated hospital-grade air purifier was already screaming at maximum capacity, sucking the toxins out of the air through its heavy HEPA and carbon filters.

Chloe was stirring, coughing softly, her small hands pulling at her quilt.

"Mommy...?" she whispered, her voice scratchy, fear wide in her bright eyes.

"I'm here, baby, I'm right here," I cried, dropping to my knees beside her bed and wrapping my arms around her uninjured shoulder, shielding her from the lingering smoke. "Everything is okay. Mommy’s got you."

Downstairs, a violent crash echoed through the house—the sound of wood splintering and glass shattering, followed by a muffled shout from Brian and the heavy thud of a physical struggle near the back mudroom.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a pneumatic drill. I wanted to protect Chloe, but leaving Brian alone down there against a ruthless syndicate operative felt like signing a death warrant.

"Chloe, listen to me," I said, holding her face gently, making sure to avoid the sensitive skin of her healing burns. "I need you to stay right here under the heavy quilt. Don't move, don't open the door for anyone except me or Daddy. Do you understand?"

She nodded slowly, tears welling in her eyes, but she squeezed my hand with surprising strength. "Be careful, Mommy."

May you like

I stood up, my heart pounding in my throat, and crept out into the smoky hallway, following the sounds of shouting and breaking furniture toward the rear of the house.
