Chapter 9 - The Past Uncovered

I lowered my phone into the shaft, the beam cutting through the dust to illuminate the topmost crate. The lid had been pried open long ago, revealing rows of leather-bound journals and heavy manila envelopes tied with faded red ribbon.

"What are those?" Miller asked, kneeling beside us with her own flashlight.

Brian reached down, pulling out the topmost journal. The leather was dry and cracked, the ink on the cover faded but still legible in the dim light: *Architectural Journal – Sector 4, 1984.*

"It’s not chemical research," Brian whispered, flipping through the brittle pages. "It’s... it’s land surveys. Dozens of them. All from the old industrial district on the south side of the city—the area where the municipal water plant was built twenty years ago."

I looked closer at the pages as Brian turned them. Pasted between the handwritten notes were newspaper clippings, police reports, and photographs of a younger Harold Cole standing in front of a sprawling, half-finished municipal building that bore an uncanny structural resemblance to our current home.

"Look at the foundation designs," I pointed out, my finger tracing a series of red ink annotations in the margin. "He didn't just design our house. He used our house as a working scale model for something much larger."

Miller’s expression hardened as she pulled a folded blueprint from one of the manila envelopes. She spread it out across the steel table, illuminating it with her tactical flashlight. "This isn't a residential blueprint. This is the structural schematic for the city’s primary water treatment reservoir."

The blood drained from my face. "The reservoir? But that supplies drinking water to half the metropolitan area."

"And look at the date on the marginal notes," Brian added, his voice trembling. "It’s dated yesterday. He wasn't just planning an attack on our family today. Our house was the test run for a larger deployment system tied directly into the municipal supply lines."
