Chapter 20 - Descent into the Core

We moved with absolute urgency, descending past the main living areas and down the dark, concrete steps leading into the sub-basement. The air down here was heavy with the metallic tang of ozone and the faint, unmistakable odor of rotten eggs—the artificial scent added to natural gas, indicating that the system was already beginning its preliminary bleed sequence.

"Move, move!" Brian urged, pushing ahead of Detective Miller as we reached the heavy steel reinforced door at the back of the sub-basement.

The door, which had been locked tight during Brian’s previous harrowing ordeal in the water tunnels, now stood slightly ajar, casting a sickly yellow glow against the damp concrete walls. A low, vibrating hum resonated from within the chamber, growing louder with every step we took.

"Cole must have triggered the wireless handshake sequence when he tapped the glass in the transport van," Miller said, his flashlight beam slicing through the dust motes dancing in the damp air. "The countdown has already started. We have less than fifteen minutes before the automated purge initiates."

We stepped inside the subterranean chamber. Unlike the dusty archive room in the attic, this space was an industrial powerhouse of humming transformers, thick bundled cables, and massive steel pipes that disappeared into the solid earth below. In the center of the room stood a heavy cast-iron terminal console, its glass monitor flickering with a line of flashing amber code.

Brian didn't hesitate. He stepped up to the console, his hands steady despite the adrenaline pumping through his veins. He looked at the two designated slots on the front panel: one shaped for a traditional mechanical key, and the other featuring a flat, glowing glass plate labeled *BIOMETRIC SCAN.*

"Miller, give me the silver key," Brian commanded.

The detective stepped forward, unclipped the small plastic case, and handed the gleaming silver key to Brian. With a deep breath, Brian slid the key into the mechanical slot and turned it ninety degrees clockwise.

*Clack.*

The first authorization light turned solid green.

"Now for the biometric scan," Miller said, pointing to the glowing glass plate. "Press your thumb firmly against the sensor until the system reads your unique genetic signature from the house’s legacy database."

Brian placed his thumb flat against the glass plate.

For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The amber code on the screen continued to flash. Then, a sharp, piercing alarm tone shrieked through the chamber, and the monitor flashed a bright, blinding red.
