Chapter 24 - The Final Whisper

Ten minutes later, wrapped in warm blankets with local emergency crews, paramedics, and county deputies swarming the house, the nightmare finally felt like it was receding. Chloe was safe, her small lungs cleared with oxygen in the back of an ambulance, her bright eyes looking up at us with the resilient, unconditional love that only a child could possess.

Detective Miller stood by our front door, handing Brian a thick manila folder recovered from Harold Cole’s personal vehicle—a folder containing the final, unredacted records of the entire conspiracy, including the identities of the other families Harold had targeted over the decades.

"He's locked away in a federal maximum-security holding facility," Miller said quietly, tipping his hat. "He won't ever see the light of day again. You and your family are safe."

Later that night, after the flashing lights of the police cruisers had faded and the neighborhood had settled back into a quiet, cold winter stillness, Brian and I sat on the edge of our bed in the dimly lit master bedroom.

The house was finally ours—truly ours, stripped of its dark history and hidden secrets.

My phone, resting quietly on the nightstand, suddenly lit up with a single, silent notification. It wasn't a video this time. Just a text message from an unknown, untraceable number, originating from deep inside the federal prison facility miles away.

I picked it up slowly and tapped the screen. The message contained a single sentence, written in Harold Cole’s familiar, sharp digital font:

May you like

*You stopped the machine, Brian... but you forgot to check who left the back door open.*

Before I could even draw breath to speak, a soft, deliberate *click* echoed from the heavy iron front door downstairs—as if a deadbolt had just been unlocked from the inside.
