Chapter 31 - The Hidden Blueprint

Dawn broke slowly over the frost-covered valley, painting the sky in pale shades of bruised purple and sickly orange. The local county deputies had finally returned—though this time, accompanied not by standard patrol officers, but by two federal agents in dark suits who flashed FBI credentials at our front door before stepping inside to survey the wreckage.
Agent Vance, a tall, sharp-eyed woman with silver-streaked hair and an uncompromising demeanor, knelt by the broken mudroom door, examining the boot prints and the shattered glass.
"We received your husband's emergency call about an intrusion," Agent Vance said, standing up and dusting off her trousers. "Local dispatch logs show a forty-minute delay in response time last night. We're currently investigating internal corruption within the county precinct."
"That intruder knew about the manila folder Miller gave us," Brian said, his voice cold and flat as he paced the length of the living room. "He demanded the original master drives from Harold’s primary vault. He said Harold was just a custodian."
Agent Vance narrowed her eyes, pulling a slim tablet from her briefcase. "The master drives. That confirms our worst suspicions. When we raided Harold Cole’s primary corporate office last week, the secure server room had been remotely wiped three minutes before our tactical team breached the perimeter. We believed there was a secondary offline backup hidden somewhere in this region."
"Hidden where?" I asked, stepping forward, holding a sleeping Chloe tightly in my arms as she rested her head against my shoulder.
Vance tapped the screen of her tablet, projecting a high-resolution topographical map of the entire county onto the flat-screen TV on the wall. A complex network of red lines lit up beneath the terrain, tracing old mining tunnels, municipal drainage pipes, and—right beneath our feet—a massive, unmapped subterranean chamber connected directly to the foundation of our house.

"Directly beneath your basement floor," Vance said grimly. "Harold didn't just build a sub-basement to store chemical samples. He built a regional data hub for the entire syndicate's operations—a vault that can only be unlocked using a biometric override sequence stored within the family bloodline."
