Chapter 33 - The Core Vault

Minutes felt like agonizing hours as Agent Vance and I stood guard over the open hatch, listening to the muffled sounds of footsteps and faint electronic beeps echoing from deep beneath the house. Down in the sub-basement, Brian was navigating the labyrinthine corridors Harold Cole had spent decades constructing out of public sight.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. It wasn't a text message this time. It was a live video feed routed directly through our home security system.

The screen flickered to life, showing Brian standing inside a massive, circular concrete chamber lined with towering server racks blinking with rows of emerald and amber lights. In the center of the room stood a raised glass pedestal holding a sleek, black metallic briefcase—the master server drive containing the entire syndicate's global network records.

Standing right beside the pedestal, holding a heavy industrial detonator wired directly to the ceiling supports, was the same hooded man from the nursery last night.

"Welcome, Brian," the man’s voice echoed through the video feed, amplified by the chamber's acoustics. "You made good time. But as you can see, I brought a little insurance policy."

Through the camera, we saw Brian raise his pistol, locking his aim directly at the man's chest. "Step away from the console, or I end this right now."

"You can shoot me, Brian," the man laughed calmly, his finger resting lightly on the red trigger of the detonator. "But the moment my heart stops beating, a dead-man’s switch sends a digital pulse through this entire grid, wiping the master drives clean and releasing a neutralizing chemical into the municipal water supply that will shut down every hospital and water plant in a fifty-mile radius. Thousands of people—including your daughter—will feel the consequences before noon."

Brian froze, his finger hovering over the trigger. He was trapped in an impossible checkmate.

"What do you want?" Brian demanded, his voice shaking with suppressed rage.

"I don't want the drives destroyed, and I don't want you dead," the man said smoothly, pulling back his hood to reveal a face strikingly similar to Harold Cole's—younger, sharper, but bearing the exact same cold, calculating eyes. "I want a partnership. The syndicate isn't going away, Brian. But with you holding the keys to the county infrastructure, we can ensure your family is never touched again."
