Chapter 18 - The Footsteps on the Stairs

Brian moved instantly, his protective instincts overriding the shock of the revelation. He shoved me gently behind his broad shoulders, sweeping the heavy flashlight forward as he stepped out of the hidden room and into the dusty crawl space behind the chimney.

"Who's there?" Brian shouted, his voice echoing sharply against the lath and plaster walls.

Silence answered him, save for the low, mournful sigh of the winter wind rattling the loose roof tiles overhead. But then came the unmistakable sound again: the slow, deliberate creak of floorboards pressing down under the weight of heavy boots—not on the third floor, but on the second floor, directly beneath us.

"Someone's in the house," I whispered, clutching the edge of Brian's jacket. "Chloe... Brian, Chloe is down on the second floor."

Fear, sharp and blinding, surged through my veins. We had locked all the exterior doors. We had disabled the smart-home automation system after the hacking incident, relying on heavy deadbolts and physical chains. Yet someone was inside.

We scrambled out of the crawl space, rushing down the narrow wooden stairs from the attic into the second-floor hallway. The corridor was dark, illuminated only by the pale moonlight filtering through the frosted windows at either end. The doors to the guest rooms stood wide open, their empty interiors casting long, distorted shadows across the carpet.

At the far end of the hallway, right outside Chloe’s bedroom door, a dark silhouette stood motionless.

"Stop right there!" Brian roared, sprinting down the corridor with the heavy metal fireplace poker raised in his hand.

The figure didn't run. Instead, it turned slowly around to face us. Even in the dim light, the familiar outline of a heavy trench coat and a wide-brimmed hat was unmistakable.

It was Detective Miller from the county sheriff’s department—the lead investigator assigned to Harold Cole’s case.

"Easy, Mr. Miller," the detective said calmly, raising his empty hands in a placating gesture as Brian skidded to a halt just inches away from him, the iron poker trembling in his grip. "Put the weapon down. You're going to want to hear what I have to say."

"What the hell are you doing in my house in the middle of the night?" Brian demanded, his chest heaving as he glared at the officer. "How did you even get in?"

"Your front door lock was bypassed," Miller said smoothly, stepping slightly to the side to reveal the open door of Chloe's room behind him. "And frankly, given what we just uncovered at the county transport depot two hours ago, I figured you and your wife needed immediate protection."

My heart skipped a beat. "Protection from what?"

Detective Miller reached into his trench coat pocket and pulled out a heavy plastic evidence bag containing a small, glowing electronic device that was beeping with a rhythmic, maddening pulse.

"From the failsafe Harold Cole set in motion before the deputies even slapped the cuffs on him," Miller said, his face grim. "The water plant wasn't the only target. And the game isn't over yet."
