Chapter 32 - The Descent

The heavy iron hatch in the utility room floor—the one we had welded shut just days ago—now hummed with a strange, low-frequency vibration. The metal was warm to the touch, as if massive industrial servers were running at full capacity deep beneath the earth.

"If the biometric override requires a bloodline match," Brian said, looking down at the heavy industrial cutting torch Agent Vance’s tactical team had set up beside the hatch, "then my father-in-law designed this trap specifically for us—or for Chloe."

"Not for Chloe," Agent Vance corrected quietly, her expression grim. "For whoever holds the legal deed and the physical signet ring to the property. The system was programmed to activate once the primary federal investigation closed, drawing you down into the vault to retrieve the drives voluntarily."

I looked down at the tarnished silver signet ring resting on the kitchen counter. The trap wasn't just physical; it was psychological. They knew we couldn't live in peace as long as there was a shadow hanging over our daughter's head. If we walked away, they would return. If we went down, we risked everything.

"I'm going down," Brian said, his tone resolute, leaving no room for argument.

"No, Brian, it's a suicide mission," I protested, grabbing his arm. "They're waiting for you down there."

"They're waiting for the data, Sarah," Brian said softly, pressing a kiss to my forehead. "And I'm going to make sure they never see a single byte of it."

With a deafening roar, the tactical team ignited the cutting torch, shooting a blinding white stream of plasma directly through the reinforced steel hinges of the sub-basement hatch. Sparks showered across the concrete floor as the heavy bolts melted away one by one. Within minutes, the heavy door groaned, tilted backward, and fell into the dark abyss below with a heavy, hollow crash.

A wave of cold, sterile air rushed up from the subterranean depths, carrying the faint smell of ozone and old, stagnant earth.

Brian strapped a tactical headlamp across his forehead, checked the magazine of his sidearm, and lowered himself slowly down the steel ladder into the pitch-black darkness, disappearing from sight.
