Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After on My Own Terms

The Mandarin Oriental ballroom was a symphony of glittering crystal chandeliers, soft jazz music, and elegant evening wear. The city’s elite mingled near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Biscayne Bay, sipping champagne and discussing venture capital, philanthropy, and international tech innovations.
I stood near the center of the room, wearing an emerald-green silk evening gown that hugged my silhouette perfectly, accented by diamond drop earrings that caught the ambient light with every turn.
Marcus stood beside me, holding two crystal flutes of champagne, his arm resting casually and respectfully against the small of my back.
"You look breathtaking tonight, Charlotte," Marcus murmured, handing me a flute.
"Thank you, Marcus," I replied, clinking my glass against his. "And thank you for reminding me what true partnership actually looks like."
As we stood there, enjoying the hum of polite conversation and the sweet taste of absolute freedom, a familiar voice drifted across the edge of the room—a voice that made me pause for a microsecond.
I glanced toward the entrance.
Standing near the reception desk, wearing a cheap, slightly frayed suit and looking ten years older than his actual age, was a distant acquaintance from our old country club circle—someone who had heard rumors of the spectacular downfall of the Vance family.
He caught my eye across the crowded room. For a split second, our gazes locked.
I didn't cower. I didn't look away. I raised my champagne flute toward him in a silent, mocking toast, offering a cool, polite, untouchable smile.
The man swallowed hard, turned on his heel, and quickly walked out of the ballroom, disappearing into the Miami night.
I turned back to Marcus, feeling the warm, brilliant glow of the evening wrapping around us.
Brandon had wanted to strip me of my dignity, my home, and my enterprise, expecting me to crumble into bitterness and despair. Instead, he had unwittingly unlocked the ultimate version of myself. He had cleared away the dead weight, burning down the house of cards so I could build an unbreakable fortress of my own design.
I looked out across the sparkling bay, listening to the soft jazz, standing tall in my own empire, completely self-made, completely sovereign, and completely happy.

"To new beginnings," Marcus whispered, raising his glass.
"To empires built to last," I replied, smiling into the future.
