Chapter 5 - The Downward Spiral

Within forty-eight hours, the Vance family’s carefully choreographed illusion of wealth dissolved into absolute chaos.
Back in Coral Gables, Evelyn and Howard Vance discovered that their golden goose wasn't just dead—she had set fire to the coop. Without the monthly $4,000 injection into their accounts, their extravagant lifestyle hit a brick wall at Mach 3. The country club memberships, the luxury vehicle leases, the private lawn care services—all of it was tied to automatic debits that instantly bounced.
Evelyn attempted to march down to my corporate office in Brickell, demanding an audience with me at the executive reception desk.
"I demand to see Charlotte Prescott!" Evelyn shrieked at the security guard, waving her manicured hand in his face. "Do you know who I am? I am her mother-in-law! She is legally obligated to support our household!"
The security guard—a towering ex-marine named Marcus Jr.—didn't even flinch. "Ma'am, unless you have an appointment or a verified corporate security badge, you are trespassing. Step away from the turnstiles or I will have the local authorities escort you off the premises."
"You can't do this to me! My son is Brandon Vance! He’s a wealthy executive!" she screamed, drawing the attention of dozens of tech executives walking through the lobby.
"Your son is currently facing federal wire fraud and embezzlement charges, ma'am," Marcus Jr. replied deadpan. "Now, walk out those doors before I help you."
Humiliated, broke, and facing the sudden realization that they were entirely dependent on Brandon’s measly $1,800 monthly salary—which was now also under legal garnishment to cover his legal defense fees—Evelyn and Howard’s household turned into a war zone.
Meanwhile, Brandon and Brooke had been forced to move into a cramped, mildew-scented one-bedroom motel off Route 1.
The luxury clothes, the high-end dining, the champagne-soaked Instagram stories—all of it vanished overnight. Brooke, accustomed to being chauffeured in a Porsche SUV and living in a multi-million-dollar Pinecrest mansion, quickly realized that a broke administrative assistant living in a Roach-infested motel room was not the glamorous sugar-daddy lifestyle she had signed up for.
"What do you mean we can't order room service?" Brooke shrieked, slamming her fist against the cheap laminate dresser of the motel room. "I’m pregnant, Brandon! I need organic food! I need proper nutrients!"
Brandon, sitting on the sagging mattress with his head in his hands, looked up, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. "Brooke, shut up! We have twelve dollars in my checking account! We can’t even afford McDonald's right now!"
"This is your fault!" she screamed, tears of rage streaming down her face. "You told me she was a pushover! You told me her money was *our* money! If I had known you were a broke loser living off your wife's charity, I never would have looked at you!"
"Oh, so now I’m the loser?" Brandon snapped, standing up and towering over her. "You were more than happy to spend my wife’s money when we were living in the mansion! You didn't complain when I bought you that Cartier bracelet!"
"That bracelet was fake gold, you idiot!" she screamed, throwing a plastic water bottle at his head.
The shouting match escalated so loudly that the motel manager banged on the door with a heavy flashlight, threatening to call the police if they didn't keep it down.
Brandon sat back down on the edge of the mattress, staring blankly at the stained carpet. His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, hoping against hope that it was a miracle text from me—a message saying it was all a bad dream and he could come home.
Instead, it was a notification from the state court: *Summons for Arraignment: Case No. 2024-CR-8841: State of Florida vs. Brandon Vance.*
