Chapter 18 - The Reckoning of the Fallen

The ambient murmur of the elite dining room vanished instantly, replaced by a suffocating, electric tension. Director Harrison frowned, looking between Julian and me with a mixture of professional disgust and morbid curiosity.

"Mr. Vance, I presume?" Harrison murmured, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "If memory serves correct, your company was liquidated, your assets frozen, and your personal credit rating reduced to absolute ash. I wasn't aware the Mandarin Oriental was currently running a shelter for corporate vagrants."

Julian flushed a violent, blotchy red, humiliation warring with desperation in his eyes. He ignored Harrison entirely, throwing himself desperately toward the edge of the table, his hands trembling as he reached out toward me. "Elena, I’m begging you! You can't do this to us! The banks are threatening foreclosure on the Miami mansion. They’ve seized my cars, my accounts, everything! Chloe packed up and left with the baby the second the utility companies shut off the electricity last Tuesday. She took everything she could grab and went back to her ex-boyfriend in Boca. I have nothing left, Elena! *Nothing!*"

I didn't flinch. I didn't even set my coffee cup down. I simply looked at him the way an entomologist might look at a particularly pathetic, crushed beetle pinned beneath a glass slide—clinical, detached, and entirely devoid of pity.

"You have your health, Julian," I said, my voice dripping with an icy, devastating calm that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. "And you have your freedom. Both of which, quite frankly, you wasted decades mismanaging. Why are you here begging me for a lifeline? Shouldn't you be calling Chloe's ex-boyfriend to ask for financial advice?"

"How can you be so cold?!" Clara shrieked, breaking past the security guards for a split second before being gently but firmly pinned against the doorframe by a towering guard. Her wig was slightly crooked, and her mascara was running down her cheeks in jagged, black tracks. "You’re destroying your own family! That house belongs to us! That empire was built on our family name!"

"Correction, Clara," I said, finally standing up to my full height, towering over the table with an aura of absolute, radiant dominance that left the entire room spellbound. "The empire was built on *my* late father's patents, *my* sleepless nights, and the four thousand dollars a month I was foolishly pumping into your bank account just to keep your delusional lifestyle afloat while you insulted me behind my back. The name Vance is nothing more than a footnote in bankruptcy court history now. Aura Global owns the trademark, the patents, the docks, and the buildings. You are trespassing."
