Chapter 12 - The Desperate Plea

I didn't invite Jessica to sit down. I simply watched her stand there, trembling in the middle of my minimalist, sunlit office, the contrast between our current realities as stark as night and day.
"Help you?" I echoed, letting out a short, humorless laugh that held no amusement whatsoever. "Jessica, let’s get one thing crystal clear before you say another word. You broke into my life, conspired with my husband to humiliate me, threw my belongings out onto the driveway, and told me I was nothing without him. And now, you waltz into my corporate headquarters—not even your own home, because you don't have one anymore—and ask for *help*?"
Jessica swallowed hard, tears spilling over her lower lashes and cutting tracks through the unwashed dust on her cheeks. "I know. I know how terrible I was. I was blind, Charlotte! Brandon lied to me. He told me he was a multimillionaire, that his family business was a goldmine, that he was going to divorce you amicably and leave you with millions while he started a fresh empire with me and our son!"
"Ah, the classic fantasy," I murmured, leaning my chin on my hand. "And let me guess—reality didn't quite match the fairy tale?"
"It’s a nightmare!" Jessica sobbed, finally dropping the manila folder onto my desk. The elastic band snapped, spilling a torrent of past-due notices, court summonses, and final eviction warnings across the immaculate white marble. "He’s a monster, Charlotte. Ever since the lawsuits started piling up and the forensic auditors froze all his corporate assets, he’s changed. He screams at me day and night. He hasn't bought baby formula in four days because his last credit card was declined at the grocery store. And his mother... Elena has been screaming at both of us because her allowance stopped, and now she’s threatening to sue *us*!"
I looked down at the chaotic mess of papers scattered across my desk. Legal seals from Miami-Dade County, notices of foreclosure on the very mansion she had so proudly claimed as her own, and mounting debts that stretched into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
"And why, exactly, do you think this is my concern?" I asked quietly.
Jessica collapsed into the visitor’s chair uninvited, burying her face in her hands and weeping openly, her shoulders shaking with violent sobs. "Because you're smart. Because you're the one who walked away with everything intact. Brandon... Brandon is hiding money, Charlotte. He’s liquidating whatever he has left under the table to run away to the Cayman Islands. He’s going to abandon me and our son with nothing. I know you have the forensic audit reports. I know you know where the hidden accounts are. If you help me expose him completely... maybe the courts will show mercy on me. Maybe I can get child support."
I stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. The irony was thick enough to cut with a knife. The woman who had sneered at my dignity was now begging me to throw her a life raft while she drowned in the wake of her own shortsighted greed.
"You want me to do your dirty work," I said softly. "You want me to hand you the weapons to destroy the man you fought so hard to steal from me."
"He destroyed *us*!" Jessica cried out, her voice echoing off the glass walls. "He used me, just like he used you! Please, Charlotte! I'll do anything. I'll testify against him in court. I'll sign whatever affidavits you need. Just... don't let him ruin my life completely."

I stood up slowly from my desk, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the bustling Miami streets below. The city moved with purpose, driven by ambition, resilience, and unyielding strength.
"Jessica," I said without turning around. "Greed is a cage, and you built yours with your own two hands. You wanted Brandon so badly? Congratulations. You won him. Now enjoy the prize."
