Chapter 14 - The Final Judgment

The courtroom of the Miami-Dade Family and Civil Courthouse was packed to capacity. Word had spread through the local business and social circles about the spectacular collapse of the Vance family dynasty, and everyone wanted a front-row seat to the grand finale.
I walked into the courtroom wearing a tailored charcoal-grey pantsuit that commanded absolute authority, accompanied by Marcus and my lead corporate attorney. The flashbulbs of reporters waiting outside the courthouse doors still danced in my retinas, but inside, the atmosphere was solemn and clinical.
Brandon sat at the opposing counsel table. He looked ten years older, his designer suit wrinkled and ill-fitting, his eyes sunken into dark, bruised sockets. Next to him sat his lawyer, a high-priced defense attorney who looked as though he was already mentally drafting his resignation letter. Jessica wasn't even in the courtroom; she had packed up whatever dignity she had left and fled back to her hometown in Ohio earlier that week, abandoning Brandon to face the wreckage alone.
Judge Harrison, a stern-faced woman with decades on the bench, adjusted her reading glasses and looked down at the towering stack of legal documents before her.
"This court has reviewed the forensic financial audits, the asset concealment reports filed by the federal investigators, and the uncontested divorce settlement terms," Judge Harrison announced, her voice echoing through the quiet courtroom. "Mr. Vance, your attempts to unlawfully shelter corporate assets while defaulting on legitimate business debts and spousal obligations have constituted severe bad faith."
Brandon stared straight ahead, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscle twitched visibly.
"Furthermore," Judge Harrison continued, "the primary residential property located on Biscayne Bay, previously held under Vance family trust holdings, has been proven through original deed documentation to have been purchased entirely using pre-marital assets belonging solely to Mrs. Charlotte Vance."
A murmur rippled through the gallery. Brandon closed his eyes, his head dropping slightly in defeat.
"Therefore," the judge struck her gavel with a sharp, decisive crack, "the court hereby orders the complete dissolution of the marriage, grants sole ownership of all disputed real estate and corporate assets to Charlotte Vance, and orders Mr. Brandon Vance to pay full restitution for legal fees and outstanding corporate liabilities. Court is adjourned."

The gavel fell one final time, echoing like a gunshot through the silence.
It was over.
