Chapter 4 - The Panic Sets In

"This... this is a joke!" Brandon shouted, his face turning a violent shade of crimson. He threw the papers onto the floor, scattering them across the marble. "You can't do this! I’m your husband! I have rights!"
"Ex-husband, darling," I corrected him, my voice chillingly level. "And those rights evaporated the moment you confessed to adultery and tried to steal my enterprise. Furthermore..."
I pulled out my phone, tapping the screen once to bring up the banking notifications.
"...your corporate cards have been frozen. Your personal accounts are under federal review for corporate embezzlement. And your mother’s monthly four-thousand-dollar allowance? Canceled permanently."
The color drained entirely from Brandon’s face. He looked like he had just been struck by lightning.
"C-canceled?" he stuttered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. "You... you can't cancel Mom's money! She needs her hip medication! She needs her lifestyle paid for!"
"Then maybe she should ask her son to get a real job," I snapped back, the pent-up rage of five years finally flashing in my eyes. "A job that pays more than $1,800 a month. A job where he doesn't have to steal from his wife to feel like a man."
Brooke lost her composure completely. She burst into theatrical, blubbering tears, stumbling forward and grabbing Brandon’s arm. "Brandon! Make her stop! She’s lying, right? Tell me she’s lying! Where are we going to live? What about my nursery fund? What about the Porsche?"
"The Porsche is already back in corporate fleet custody," Marcus chimed in smoothly, checking his Rolex. "Tow truck picked it up from the driveway about ten minutes ago. It’s parked down the street."
Brandon looked around wildly, realizing that his entire meticulously constructed castle of lies was crumbling into dust around him. He looked at the luxury furniture, the high-end kitchen, the expansive pool—and then he looked at me, seeing the steel wall I had erected behind my eyes.
"Charlotte... please," Brandon whispered, his arrogant swagger evaporating into pathetic desperation. He took a staggering step toward me, his hands outstretched. "Let’s... let’s talk about this. We can work it out. We were married for five years! We have history! You don't have to throw us out on the street!"
I took a deliberate step back, looking at him as if he were a cockroach crawling across a kitchen floor.
"History?" I asked softly. "You mean the history where you treated me like an ATM? The history where you sneered behind my back while spending my hard-earned money on a twenty-three-year-old Instagram model? That history?"
"I made a mistake!" he yelled, his voice cracking, desperation turning back into ugly frustration. "Every man makes mistakes! Brooke meant nothing! She was just... she was just a distraction! Please, Charlie, don't do this to me!"
"Don't call me Charlie," I said, turning my back on him. "Marcus, make sure they are out of the house by nine o'clock. If they leave so much as a single designer sock behind, throw it in the trash."
"With pleasure, Charlotte," Marcus replied, stepping forward and gesturing to the security guards.
As I walked back out toward my Mercedes, breathing in the fresh Miami morning air for the first time as a completely free woman, my phone buzzed violently in my hand.
It was a call from Evelyn.
I answered it on speakerphone, letting the shrill, demanding voice echo across the quiet driveway.
*"Charlotte! What the hell is wrong with you?"* Evelyn shrieked the moment I picked up. *"My bank app says the wire transfer didn't go through! Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is? I’m at the country club boutique trying to pick up a designer handbag, and your card declined! Fix this right now or so help me God, I will make sure Brandon divorces your—"*
"Evelyn," I interrupted, my voice smooth as glass. "Brandon already divorced me."
*"What?"*
"And as for your allowance?" I continued, smiling as I opened the car door. "Consider it a severance package for thirty years of raising a parasite. Have a nice life, Evelyn. Try getting a job."
May you like
I hung up, blocked her number permanently, and drove away.
