Chapter 20 - The Open Sea and the Shadow Ahead

By late evening, the transatlantic merger documents were fully signed, sealed, and digitized across three continents. Aura Global Enterprises was officially cemented as an unstoppable global juggernaut, and the financial markets were buzzing with predictions that my net worth would triple by the end of the fiscal year.
I stood on the expansive private balcony of my penthouse suite overlooking the Miami skyline, the warm ocean breeze tangling gently through my hair. Marcus stood a few paces behind me, holding two crystal flutes filled with vintage Dom Pérignon. He handed me one, his fingers brushing mine with a lingering warmth that sent a subtle, delicious thrill straight down my spine. We had built an empire together out of the ashes of betrayal, but over the past few months, the partnership had quietly, organically evolved into something far deeper, far more genuine than anything I had ever known with Julian.

I walked inside and picked up the device. The caller ID showed a restricted, unknown number originating from a local county holding facility.
I pressed the accept button and slid it to my ear.
"Elena?" a raspy, desperate voice whispered through the static, sounding faint and broken, like a ghost calling from the bottom of the sea. "You... you think you've won everything, don't you? You think you're safe up there in your glass tower?"
May you like
My grip on the phone tightened sharply, my eyes narrowing as a cold, sudden dread flickered in the pit of my stomach. "Who is this?"
A dark, manic chuckle echoed through the line, followed by the heavy click of a prison phone receiver being slammed down on the other end, leaving behind only an ominous, dial-tone hum.
