Chapter 13 - The Trap Closes

Jessica left my office in tears, her footsteps echoing down the hallway as security quietly escorted her out of the building. I didn't feel pity, nor did I feel triumphant; I felt only a profound sense of closure. The universe had a way of balancing its accounts without needing any extra help from my end.
However, Brandon wasn't going down quietly.
Two days later, my personal cell phone rang. It was an unknown number with a local Miami area code. I swiped to answer, suspecting it might be another desperate stunt from my soon-to-be ex-husband.
"Charlotte," Brandon’s voice came through the speaker. It didn't sound like the confident, arrogant titan who had thrown me out of my own home a few months ago. It sounded frayed, exhausted, and laced with a manic, desperate edge. "We need to talk."
"We have nothing to talk about, Brandon," I replied, my voice cool and even. "Our divorce lawyers handle our communications. If you call this number again, I’m filing an immediate restraining order for harassment."
"Wait! Don't hang up!" Brandon shouted over the line. A background noise echoed—the frantic, high-pitched wailing of a baby and Elena’s shrill voice screaming obscenities in the distance. "It’s about the company. It’s about Vance Logistics. I know you bought up our primary shipping contracts. I know you're behind the forensic audit that froze my personal trust fund."
"I am a successful businesswoman expanding her market share," I replied smoothly. "If your books were legitimate, an audit wouldn't have bothered you."
"You planned this," Brandon snarled, his voice shifting instantly from pleading to venomous hatred. "You sat there playing the sweet, quiet wife while you were secretly positioning yourself to stab me in the back the moment I slipped! You ruined my life, Charlotte!"
"No, Brandon," I corrected him, every word dripping with ice. "You built a house of cards on a foundation of lies, arrogance, and infidelity. You handed me the scissors the day you signed those divorce papers and told me to leave. I simply chose how to use them."
"I'm going to ruin you," Brandon hissed, his voice dropping into a dark, menacing threat. "I still have contacts in the shipping commission. I can make sure your vessels are tied up in regulatory red tape for months. I can destroy Aura Global before it even gets off the ground!"
"Go ahead," I challenged softly, a slight smile touching my lips. "Try it. File a complaint, call your contacts, pull whatever strings you have left. But before you do, you might want to check your email."
"What are you talking about?"
"Check your inbox, Brandon. Specifically, the notification from the Miami-Dade County Superior Court that was filed an hour ago. Your attempts to liquidate assets into offshore accounts have just been flagged by federal investigators. Your assets aren't just frozen anymore—they're under criminal review."
Silence stretched across the line, heavy and suffocating.

"You... you didn't," Brandon whispered, the horror finally setting into his bones.
"Check your email, Brandon," I repeated, and calmly hung up the phone.
